Should High School Students Have Less Homework

A Chicago-area mother was looking at her son sleeping in his bed with 30 minutes till school and woke him up and questioned why he was still asleep. He said that he didn’t get a lot of sleep because he had too much homework. The mother asked him if he wanted to do his homework and he replied no. Both the mother and the son agreed that both of them didn’t want to do the schoolwork so they decided that was the end of homework. The mother also mentioned that if there was something that he was struggling with that they would do the work but she thought that after eight hours at a desk she didn’t want her son to bet at a desk for eight more. Studies show that only eight percent of High school students get enough sleep each night. The other 92% are living with borderline-to-serious sleep deficits that could lead to daytime drowsiness, depression, headaches and poor performance at school. “The natural sleep-wake pattern shifts during adolescence, making earlier bedtime and wake times more difficult. Most students believe that it is unfair that some schools have less homework; take Finland for example, they have barely any homework and they are one of the top schools in the world. “There’s no evidence globally that doing more of the same will improve results. An equally relevant argument would be, let’s try to do less. Increasing time comes from the old industrial mindset. The important thing is ensuring school is a place where students can discover who they are and what they can do.
