An operating system, also known as OS, is a software on the hard drive that allows the hardware of a computer to communicate and operate with the computer software. The OS is the most important software running on a computer because it handles the memory, processes and all of its software and hardware. The OS helps coordinate all the programs that can access your CPU, memory and storage so that each program gets what it needs. Without the operating system a computer and its software would be completely useless. Figure 1 depicts the OS programs that lie between the applications software and the computer hardware. It also shows how the application software links with the OS link with the hardware. Within the OS there is a supervisor …show more content…
o Several programs can be in operation at once. o Found in Microsoft’s Windows and Apple’s MacOS. • Multi-user: o Multiple users to take advantage of the computer’s resources at the same time. o Determines if each program is using sufficient and separate resources so if there is a problem with one user it wouldn’t affect all of the users. Operating systems come preloaded on any computer you purchase and it is possible to upgrade or change the OS. There are three Operating Systems that will be explained further on, Microsoft Windows, Chrome OS, and Android. Android is different than Microsoft Windows and Chrome OS because it is an operating system for mobile phones and tablets. Microsoft Windows or Windows OS is a computer operating system developed by the Microsoft Corporation to run PCs and was introduced in 1985 and is one of the most dominate operating systems for personal computers today. Windows OS provides a graphical user interface or GUI, virtual memory management, multitasking and support for many devices. MS DOS was one of the earliest operating system for consumers. Windows was seen as a graphical user-interface or GUI that allowed users an easier and more visually pleasing way to use MS-DOS. Windows is different than other OS because they were able to have various windows operating more than one program or process simultaneously on the computer screen. Figure 2
An operating system (OS) is designed to act as an interface between the computer and its user. The Windows Server OS is a platform that you can use to build an infrastructure of connected applications, networks, and Web services. Originally codenamed Windows Server "Longhorn," Windows Server 2008 is built from the same code base as Windows Vista .
Operating Systems are complex pieces of software that are designed for powerful hardware, easily capable of running many programs at once, the prioritize hardware task requests known as ‘system calls’ and allocate them memory space or processing time as needed.
Windows 7 is an operating system that is of the Microsoft Windows family. Windows 7 is part of one of the most used operating systems around the world. It is the successor to Windows XP and Windows Vista. Alongside Windows 7 are two other operating systems that are viewed as alternatives to the Windows OS. Those alternatives include Linux operating systems as well as Windows Server 2008.
The Operating system is one most important parts of anything that runs on technology. It manages the computers memory and processes the information for the software and hardware. There is different operation system for pc, tablets, smart cars, and smartphones.
A computers operating system (OS) is the core of the computer and is more than just software. The OS controls the computer’s memory and processes as well as its hardware and software. It is the brain of the computer. Software applications on the other hand perform a certain task. Ex. Google Chrome provides internet and Adobe allows PDF files to be read (among other things). The OS is what makes all of these applications work successfully and accomplish whatever the application is designed to accomplish.
Q. What is an operating system? A. Operating system works as an interpreter between computer Hardware and application. Operation system works as a user interface. Q. Types of Operating systems? A. There are two types of operating systems 1. SOS: Simple Operating System as for example- Windows 95,98, ME 2. NOS: Network Operating System as for example- Windows NT, 2000, 2003. Q. What is server? A. Server are computer that provides the services. As for Example:1. DNS Server 2. WINS Server 3. DHCP Server 4. RAS Server 5. VPN Server Q. What is RAS Server? A. RAS stands for Remote Access Server. It is basically use for mobile user in the network. This server provides the access connectivity for
The first OS we are going to look at is Linux, it can be a hard system to use and understand, if you have not used it before, you must have a good knowledge of computers in order to deal with Linux. Commands have to be typed in on the command line, and most people do not know or understand command line text. Linux does not have a great number of vendor selling their computer or software, so there is not a good support system for it.
Operating systems are very important to be able to run different applications on your phone or computer etc. so you can run multiple programs at the same time, it manages internal memory, it runs the input and output of attached devices like your phone or printer by transferring data. And lastly it also enables you to run more than 1 processor at the same time by dividing the program. So as you can see operating systems are very important to improve and be able to run your PC.
ANSWER: Operating system exist on the grounds that they offer a sensible approach to tackle the issue of making a usable processing framework. The major objective of computer systems is to execute user programs and to make user issues simpler. Computer hardware is developed to this objective. Since exposed hardware alone is not simple to utilize, application programs are produced. These programs require basic operations, for example, those controlling the I/O devices. The regular capacities of controlling and assigning assets are then brought together into one bit of software: the operating system. Another way we
The operating system is an extremely crucial type of system software. It is the backbone of a computer. Without an operating system, our computers will not function properly. Operating systems are highly skilled software that includes programs with an ample amount of information. This information provided from these programs makes it easier for applications to communicate with the hardware. Linux and Windows are two operating systems that dominate in our society today. They are not only dominating in our society, but also in the business world. Windows and Linux are the two most popular
When looking at an Operating System one could often say that an Operating System is a large sum made up of small separate parts. Much like how Knuth describes computer science being the “wall of mini stones”. The Operating System, or the “OS” can be defined as “software that communicates with the hardware and allows other programs to run”. (TechTerms.com, 2012) The Operating System makes use of two modes known as User Mode and Kernel Mode in order to
Operating System – The user interface and the OS it offers is fast and flexible.
First, Microsoft Windows. Microsoft began its dominance in the early 80s by developing DOS also known as disk operating system. This is the first operating system made for a PC. Then came Windows 9X which was later called Windows 95. Then it
Operating Systems manage hardware and provide services for application software; this means that it makes it easier for users to interact with different software and hardware available on the computer.
When you start a pc with an OS, it allows you to do projects like:
