Writing is a skill that improves over time with experience and exposure to different concepts. English 111 provided me with new skills and information that allowed me to enhance my writing abilities. As a student, I was given the opportunity to explore and develop my own writing process. This course explained, in depth, the components of a college level paper and correct grammar rules. By creating and following my own writing process, understanding the correct flow/components of a paper, and improving my grammar skills my writing improved tremendously. Through taking the course, English 111, I was able to develop as a writer and improve my writing abilities.

Throughout the semester, I learned how to write a strong thesis statement, transition sentences, and how to intertwine my body paragraphs with one another so that they all connect with one another and flow smoothly. These were all parts of a paper that I previously learned in high school, but the difference is that I was not a strong writer in these areas. Now, after taking English 111 I can confidently say that I have improved tremendously in these areas. I first saw this shift in improvement in paper number four, which discusses the career of a physician assistant. Throughout the paper, I thought I did an excellent job connecting the paragraphs to each other. For example, on page four and five I connected the concluding sentence of paragraph number four and the introductory sentence of paragraph number five to one another, which resulted in the paragraphs running smoothly together, “However, like all careers, there are disadvantages to being a physician assistant. The disadvantages of being a physician assistant are mainly due to work hours, work intensity, and legal issues.” When the paragraphs throughout a paper flow smoothly with one another the paper is easier to understand and helps centralize the …show more content…
One disadvantage of high school was that our teachers focused very little time on grammar; therefore, I never gained a good foundation in correct grammar. Over the years this has hurt me in my writing because proper grammar is crucial in writing. By going to the learning center and receiving help from Professor Cox I was able to recognize repeated grammar mistakes within my papers. One very common mistake I made throughout all my papers was not inserting a comma after a subordinating clause at the beginning of a sentence. I noticed that I had a tendency to always start sentences with subordinating clauses, but would never put in a comma afterwards. Once I recognized this mistake and learned the correct way to fix it I started paying close attention to this grammatical error, making sure I did not make it again. Therefore, towards the middle to end of the semester I no longer made these errors in my papers. A good example of this correct grammar technique can be found in paper number four numerous times, “When applying to PA school, people need to beware of the programs pre-requisites because they vary between programs.” The comma between “school” and “people” is the correct use of a comma after a subordinating clause. Another grammar mistake I continuously made was putting a comma in front of the words “therefore” and “however” when a semicolon was needed. Because of this, I make mistakes structuring it correctly or even punctually. In high school, I took a college English class that would allow me to advance in my writing skills. However, the class only focused on using transition words, and nothing else. In this English 1001 class, I have learned to write my paper with fewer structure mistakes. However, I was never good at writing my paper that was punctually correct. In the past, I was told to never use the word I in any writing assignments. This often confused me when I was writing the research paper. Sometimes, I would not punctuate my sentences correctly after the signal phrase. In the essay, I wrote, “At one point, a professor said…”and I forgot the comma after the signal phrase very, said. Slowly, I was able to use this format and express my opinion on the research. Unfortunately, I still make those mistakes unintentionally and it often hurts my grade. In the first essay, I did well on expressing my ideas, but structurally, I did not do so well. The primary aim of English 1101 is to prepare the student to effectively communicate, and identify or create new knowledge in various spheres of life. English 1101 assisted me to have control over the writing conventions through extensive writing practice or reading, guided by evaluations and feedbacks from my course instructor. The course contains several topics namely; effective writing processes, rhetorical organizations methods, academic writing formats and styles, critical reading skills, researching, and citing the researched sources.
English 111 was the first class English class that I have taken since my senior year of high school in 2004. When I first signed up for the class I figured it was going to be a bit difficult with reading assignments, I was not expecting to be writing 3 to 5 papers every other week which I found to be hard at first.
In English 111 I have struggled with many assignments over the course of the semester, picking myself up over time from countless mistakes on papers, to procrastinating on basic class work assignments. Before Fall semester, I had no idea what college would be like, or how hard it could be. Things were not the same as high school; it was different to a point where college seemed a lot harder than it was supposed to be. In English 111, I got the chance to meet new students and different professors that have helped guide me to success throughout the semester.
I intend on acing English 1102 online. Prior to this course, I was home schooled for three and a half years, and many of my classes were online. One of the online programs I used was Florida Virtual. Additionally, I have completed three online college courses—including English 1101. Because I have engaged in online schooling, I have established the skills necessary to devote myself not only to a physical classroom, but also to online environment. In the beginning, being self-motivated was difficult. I transitioned from a public middle school to a self-disciplined online program. My busy mother could do little to help me be accountable for my school work. As time progressed, I wormed myself into a pit of unfinished assignments. My parents stepped
English Comp 1 was an eye opening experience. The course was emotionally and physically draining, but I strongly believe it prepared me for Comp 2. Learning and improving are a few of the rewards I received through hard work and dedication during the course. Throughout English comp 1, I discovered my biggest weakness. I improved some of my various difficulties, and I achieved a rewarding high point.
During this semester, the realization of my past was that I have often skimmed through parts of the writing process to get the job done. Not being an avid reader often hindered my writing abilities. This class most definitely made me realize that the entire writing process is important and having peer reviews also helped significantly and certainly made a difference in the result of my work. Taking the time to read, brainstorm my thoughts, write an outline, rough draft after rough draft, reading constructive criticism of others helped in the revisions of my papers’ reaching the best possible outcome. When selecting English 102, I knew I would be challenged, but to what extent I was unsure. If like past English courses that were taken learning to write essays would be the goal. An aspect that I often struggle with is proper punctuation. Truthfully, I do not know how to correctly use punctuation. When writing, I place punctuation by mimicking authors’ formats or by placing them where it feels right. This is present in all of my writing, but I am attempting to improve. Punctuation also plays a part in another weakness of mine, one that is most likely present within this essay. Since middle school, it was engrained in my mind that a good essay is a long essay, so I have a tendency for wordiness. To elongate an essay, I tend to add needless words and sentences. For example, in the rough draft of the Whole Process Essay, I added several unrelated occurrences to elongate the paragraphs. Although my essays were long and wordy, the professor commented on vagueness and unclearness within the whole process and practice essay. Sometimes, I disregard the fact that the reader might not know what it is I am writing about or the sentence makes perfect sense to me. The latter is the most common, I quickly read the sentence and it appears fine to me. Within the Whole Process Essay, another weakness was brought to my attention. I lack structure, a key element in effective writing. Within the same essay and a few others, I simply added what felt right, sometimes the result would be acceptable but in other instances, it was a long, jumbled mess.
Throughout this semester in English 101, I have made a significant improvement on multiple things, including how to be an exceptional writer and thinker. English has always been one of my most favored subjects to study because to me it instructs students how to be intelligent, how to become a more creative and critical thinker, and be able to develop ethical values and imagination. You can express yourself more efficiently in English than you can in any other subject. This class has truly made me a more confident writer and helped me express myself in different ways through the different types of papers I wrote. Proficient writing is an essential skill in all aspects of academic and professional achievement. English 101, Introduction to Composition and Rhetoric, provided the framework to good writing, teaching me composition and rhetoric fundamentals, polishing up my grammar and style, and expressing a clear message. English 102, Composition, Rhetoric, and Research, continued to build on the skills I learned in English 101, focusing on the subject matter research process and employing various rhetorical and literary devices to better express a clear message to the reader. The course also improved my critical thinking capacity, allowing me to culturally evaluate my target audience, present logically flowing arguments using appropriate language and structure, and critically reviewing my writing projects for content and expression. Every writer inherently knows there’s always room to improve and I hold fast to this mindset in all academic, professional, and personal writing projects. English 102 has both challenged and inspired me to grow into a much better writer than before I began the class, providing the necessary skills to be not just a good writer, but a great writer.
The information learned in English 111 will have a major impact in my life. This class was created to teach students how to properly write and understand different genres of writing, and to emphasize the importance of writing. As many of us continue our educational paths, it will be critical to understanding the fundamentals of writing, and I am positive this class will be a great steppingstone. This My goal is not to achieve an A in this class, but to achieve success in this subject and leave with information I will use for my benefit.
Despite the review I got on any of these assignments I have taken away a ton from each piece. English 103 has given me a short measure of time to deliver a wide range of composing pieces, and in addition winding up more educated while creating bits of work. Going into English 103 I was to a great degree positive about my written work capacity and did not understand the huge measure of terms and methods I had never known about. The greatest perspective I am detracting from this class is on terms I had never utilized or heard in English class: ethos, feeling, and logos. These three associated terms were acquainted with me at the earliest reference point of the semester and were immediately installed into my brain and my composition. In class
This first semester at the University of Akron has flown by. I learned many new writing concepts that helped me become a better writer. English composition was a required class that I had to take in order to get my degree. Although this class was required I still wanted to take this class to become more knowledgeable about writing. Coming into English Composition I was worried about all of the papers and the workload that I would have to complete. I knew that I was going to have to write a lot more than I previously had in highschool, but I was unsure of just how much. The works that I decided to include in my portfolio comprise of my Literacy Narrative, Image Analysis Paper, and essay titled Mayas Hardships based on Maya’s experiences in I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings. I selected these works because I felt that they are the ones that require the most improvement to them. The papers i've chosen show how far I’ve came In English Composition.
I have only been attending Cleveland State University for two semesters, and as this course comes to an end I feel like I grown and learned many techniques more than ever. I came to Cleveland State University with only my high school knowledge on how to format an argumentative essay, and throughout this course I now know how to write and format many other papers. Taking English 100 has taught me how to break down and analyze an article, it taught me how to find confidence in my work, and it helped me grow to an even better writer.
