In the beginning of the semester, everyone was write down two goals that would be accomplished in the semester. Experience in writing papers showed me that I was weak in writing any type of papers. However, I was determined to stop repeating idea by rewording as well as writing information that is unnecessary. Also, I knew I had to improve on writing essays with no to very few mistakes, whether it is structurally or punctually. I am pleased with discontinuing any repetitions while writing, but am not so pleased about structuring and punctuating my sentences. In high school, I was never taught to have only what was necessary in any writing assignments. Usually, I would change my wording around to make my paper longer or even meet the required amount. In this course, I wanted to be able to stop …show more content…
Because of this, I make mistakes structuring it correctly or even punctually. In high school, I took a college English class that would allow me to advance in my writing skills. However, the class only focused on using transition words, and nothing else. In this English 1001 class, I have learned to write my paper with fewer structure mistakes. However, I was never good at writing my paper that was punctually correct. In the past, I was told to never use the word I in any writing assignments. This often confused me when I was writing the research paper. Sometimes, I would not punctuate my sentences correctly after the signal phrase. In the essay, I wrote, “At one point, a professor said…”and I forgot the comma after the signal phrase very, said. Slowly, I was able to use this format and express my opinion on the research. Unfortunately, I still make those mistakes unintentionally and it often hurts my grade. In the first essay, I did well on expressing my ideas, but structurally, I did not do so well. By rewriting the essay, I hope to earn a better
Throughout my degree I have taken subjects that provide various strategies for developing engaging learning for diverse classes. While my year 9 English class was organised based on grading and performance of students all other classes were of mixed ability, interest and learning styles. Within my observation week I took note of the teaching styles that were primarily used; year 11 Standard were primarily learning through presentations and note taking, while year 9 English worked well through discussion and sharing of information. Other things I noted was that year 7 needed primarily short activities that link but are different to engage the range of students and ensure they were taking in the appropriate information. My year 11 Drama class
I learned many new things from English 1102 class. It was not much fun but I learned some interesting things. For my research, I needed a topic that interests me. I first started to search topics from the chemistry field. I could not find any interesting topics then I came across an article that talks about how robots will take our jobs and every one would be jobless. After reading that article, I was really convinced that robots were bad for human society and people should be focusing on improving other fields such as medicine than wasting time and money in inventing a robot, which is one type of luxury and that, will take our jobs. So I chose this topic for my research. For further discussions, I started searching for some more article about robots not good for human society and I found that there was not much about the negative impact of robots in human society other than taking human jobs. So I was stuck but then I found an article that supports the robots. It was a good article and it explains how robots are useful in human society. The Article says that robots will create new jobs and benefit employers, government and disable people. I also found in one article saying that if robots will do our jobs humans can focus on bigger problems like finding cures for diseases, finding solution to prevent natural disasters and many more. Therefore, I decided to support the robot’s positive impact rather than supporting
Unlike reading, when writing, it is important that grammar, spelling and vocabulary terms are used correctly, therefore restricting me from writing in the way that I would prefer. The most stressed phrase while in high school was, "It is not the content of the essay, but rather the mechanics of grammar and speech that are most prominent." Unfortunately, I have never been one to enjoy the art of writing. In fact, I was recently given a diagnostic test, determining at which level I write and whether or not I should be upgraded to a higher achieving English class. Unfortunately, I did not pass the test with flying colors. This was not due to the fact that I am incapable of writing a good paper, but rather that I am unable to write in a limited amount of time, using the emphasized principles of correct; grammar, vocabulary and spelling. In the reading, Shitty First Drafts, by author Anne Lamott, it is a fact that in order to write a brilliant paper, a first draft must be created. According to Lamott, "The Only way I can get anything written at all is
I used to consider writing as tumble words from your mind, write, read it through, fix minor mistakes, and done. However, you rarely get successful. The truth is many students, including myself, struggle with starting to write a word, or getting stuck in the middle without knowing the main point of the writing. After completing English 101, I can explain the writing process, evaluate the strengths of my essay, and identify my weaknesses.
As time went by and I took different types of writing assignments, I improved the structure and organization of my writing. I learned the use of Standard English rules and styles in constructing sentences. I also learned how to organize my thoughts, ideas and experiences. Furthermore, I learned how to construct and maintain a coherent transition of paragraphs, as well as, how to select words, idioms, sayings and phrases that best suited the topic or purpose. With time, I even started to use diagrams to help organize my thoughts, ideas regarding the intended topic even before I write it. Learning how to remain relevant to a topic has enabled me to improve my grades.
I remembered I did not get good grade in one of my assaignment in the first semister because I assumed wrongly that witout proffreding the reader is able easily understand my thoughts or ideas, but I was wrong. After this experience I always proofread my all papers or essay before submit to Professors. All of my papers need a substantial amount of proofreading for grammatical errors, and for sentence’s structural problems. When I write a full sentence usually I stop and look back over it. If it sounds correct I move forward to the next sentence but when I feel the sentence doesn’t sound correct I try to fix the sentence’s structure. I always recheck the paragraph before moving to the next paragraph. I always make an outline before
Prior to Composition I, I felt very uneasy about my writing ability. My high school’s English classes were very focused on literature rather than writing. This was quite concerning for me because I knew that my writing techniques and essays needed to be top-notch when applying to prestigious colleges. Before Composition I, I did not fully understand how to utilize commas and periods. I consistently was writing with run-on sentences. My first paper in Composition I, “The Falling Man” is a prime example of this. This paper was an evaluative essay and in my first paragraph I stated, “However, he is acknowledged as one of the trapped victims on the upper floors of the skyscraper who had two options- to fall searching for safety or jump to escape the massive amounts

While writing is an essential part of a student’s success I managed to avoid papers as much as humanly possible. The reason I have avoided writing isn’t that I do not like to write but that I am not comfortable writing papers that are going to be graded because I have a hard time putting down what I am thinking so typically it is a grammatical mess. I often over use or do not use enough punctuation and have poor choice in wording. Throughout the next fifteen weeks my personal goal is to be able to write a paper with proper grammar and be able to balance my paper.
As a writer, I identify as a disorganized writer. Usually High School English teachers hand out a template of how an essay should be composed. I never understood the teacher’s outline. Setting up the exact order of the paper and then writing it like in a science lab isn’t how my mind works. My concept of an outline is just writing the paper as the thoughts pop into my mind. When I write, I like to let my fingers flow within the thoughts inside of my brain and after finishing the paper, I try to fix the mess, which acts like a bandaid because there is no way of fixing the essay. My weakest link in the art of writing happens to be grammar. English, a complex beast, has a vast amount of rules and I’m not a fan of remembering anything. Commas
When composing an essay, or journal entry, or just plain writing, I struggle as a writer with avoiding awkward or wordy phases in my written work. This struggle is yet again based on last year’s experience and feedback from my English class. Improvement with this struggle can be made by the following strategies: reading over my paper more carefully, avoiding the use of words that sound intelligent but don’t flow with the paper, and editing my paper with peers. Recognizing this struggle and following these strategies would improve my writing.
When writing I forget to use commas, but now after writing several papers I don’t overlook them anymore. Another problem I had was that sometimes when I have to complete a word requirement or a page requirement, I add some fluff. I use some words that are useless in the essay, just to meet the requirement. Writing is just more than just meeting requirements, it takes time and effort. Before this class, I never really used to revise. Getting back my first grade, I realized that revision is important. This is what I learned about myself as a writer and with this class I have improved on some of these
I was not really surprised by the definition of the terms, but the material expressed in this essay surprised me. What really surprised me is that while I was reading, I noticed that everything they were saying was the truth. As I started reading the essay, I started asking myself question. I realized that I am sometimes the kind of student that they were talking about. Sometimes we procrastinate and leave everything for the last moment, and that is when we start to have problems and realize that our grade is already permanent and we cannot do anything to raise that grade up. We should read the book on our free time every day, go over the notes, and never wait until the last day before an exam to do so. Knowledge is not information. Information is
To improve something, usually takes time and since the first day of class on August 19th my sentence writing has became exceptionally better. In my argumentative essay I used limited sentences structures and had multiple fragments. In the essay I used two types of sentences I knew about, the others came by a way of accident. I only knew how to write simple sentences and compound sentence. I could have made more complex sentences if didn’t cut of sentences with a period. I later improved this in a later assignment of proposing a solution, where we I knew how to write all four sentence types and this
It has been 10 years since I started learning English. During these 10 years, I was taught by many English teachers, and all of them helped me a lot in learning English. However, I think my elementary school English teacher, Mrs. Huang, helped me the most on my language development. She helped me start learning English and introduced the basic rules of English to me. Moreover, she motivated my interest in learning English.
