On August 2, 1923, Calvin Coolidge was vacationing at his father's home at Plymouth,Vermont when one night he was awakened by the tragic news of Warren Harding's death. Harding ,who had been on a public speaking tour of the West, when his health began to deteriorate, tried poorly to alleviate the scandal that have been plaguing his presidency. Praying by candlelight, Coolidge descended the stairs to the plain living room of his father's house, lighted only by two kerosene lamps. Upon an old wooden business desk, a copy of the US Constitution was found and Coolidge took the oath of office, as his father

ideas of frugality and caution be reinforced when he attended college at Amherst College in Massachusetts. It is these beliefs which will guide him for the rest of his life both politically and socially.
	Coolidge was the first in his family to attend college. His years in Amherst gave Coolidge "an understanding of culture, strengthened his bent toward civic service and also persuaded him of the necessity of stability and harmony in the affairs of men." ("American Presidency"). He later graduated with honors and became an scholar with an interest in law.
	Graduating from Amherst in 1895, Coolidge became a lawyer in the offices of John Hammond and Henry Field at Northampton Massachusetts. Though he practiced much law at Northampton, he never prospered as an attorney, yet was still able to earn enough in his practice to eventually become financially independent in such a short time. ("American Presidency").
	Coolidge's association with Hammond and Field led him into politics, his second profession. Politics came very easily to Coolidge because his father was a frequent officeholder in Vermont. Hammond and Field themselves were active political leaders and found the young Coolidge a willing political apprentice. After Theodore Roosevelt’s father died of stomach cancer while Theodore was in his second year of college at Harvard College, it pushed and caused him to work even harder than he has been. His father’s death changed the direction of his whole life. After he graduated from Manga Cum Laude in 1880, he ended up enrolling at Columbia Law School, where he ranked twenty-first in his class and then he got married to Alice Hathaway Lee from Massachusetts. Even before his presidency, Taft was a lawman. His first venture into politics and law was becoming Assistant Prosecutor of Hamilton County, Ohio. In 1887, he was appointed judge of the superior court in Cincinnati. At age 32, he became the Solicitor General of President Benjamin Harrison. He was the youngest person to receive this position at the time. From 1901 to 1904, he was the first civilian Governor-General of the Philippines. The last position he held before his he became president was Roosevelt’s secretary of war in 1904. All of these positions gave him political experience, which prepared him for presidency.
Grace Goodhue worked at the Clarke Institute for the Deaf as a teacher. It was there that she met her future husband. Their love grew rapidly and on October 4, 1905 they got married in her parents home (Lawerence). She was perfect for him, his opposite in everything (Sobel, 247). They later had two sons, John Coolidge, and Calvin Jr. Coolidge, who he loved dearly (Greenburg, 22). In 1924, Calvin Jr. had a simple accident in tennis and got a simple blister which slowly became infected. He was rushed to the hospital, but a day later he had died. Calvin Jr. had died at the age of sixteen. It was at this time when people saw Coolidge as a father not the President of the United States. This did not stop Coolidge from pursuing his dream, he kept on going (Sobel, 295, 296, 298).
III. McKinley had a relatively easy and normal childhood. He was the seventh child of eight. His parents were loving people who instilled in McKinley the importance of hard-work, religion, and education. McKinley worked very hard in school as a youth and then attended Alleghany College in Pennsylvania for one term, until he had to leave for financial reasons. Coolidge was the 30th president and only served 1 and a half term. You may be wondering why he was nicknamed ¨Silent Cal¨, well the reason behind why Calvin got the nickname was because he would barely talk to anyone unless it was for a speech or he was spoken to. Many people thought it was strange that he barely opened his mouth.
