In a laboratory model of cars skidding to a stop, data are measured for four trials using two blocks. The blocks have identical masses but different coefficients of kinetic friction with a table: μk = 0.2 and 0.8. Each block is launched with speed vi = 1 m/s and slides across the level table as the block comes to rest. This process represents the first two trials. For the next two trials, the procedure is repeated but the blocks are launched with speed vi = 2 m/s. Rank the four trials (a) through (d) according to the stopping distance from largest to smallest. If the stopping distance is the same in two cases, give them equal rank. (a) vi = 1 m/s, μk = 0.2 (b) vi = 1 m/s, μk = 0.8 (c) vi = 2 m/s, μk = 0.2 (d) vi = 2 m/s, μk = 0.8

- Physics students do an expriment to determine the coefficient of kinetic friction between a wooden object and the horizontal table it is on. This object has a mass of 1.6 kg. The students push it against a spring, which compresses the spring by 18cm. When released, the spring sends the object moving across the table and it stops 82 cm from where it was released. The spring constant is 200 N/m. Find the obeject-table coefficient of kinetic friction.arrow_forwardA dog with a mass of 57.0 kg slides down a wet slope with negligible friction. The dog starts from rest and has a speed of 2.10 m/s at the bottom. What is the height of the slope (in m)?arrow_forwardA rock of mass m falls from the top of a cliff and it experiences a significant amount of air drag as it falls. The rock has a mass of 3.6 kg and the cliff is 55 m tall. If it is going 22 m/s when it hits the ground, what was the average force of air resistance? Express your answer to two significant figures and include the appropriate units.arrow_forward
- When a car is hit from behind, its passengers undergo sudden forward acceleration, which can cause a severe neck injury known as whiplash. During normal acceleration, the neck muscles play a large role in accelerating the head so that the bones are not injured. But during a very sudden acceleration, the muscles do not react immediately because they are flexible; most of the accelerating force is provided by the neck bones. Experiments have shown that these bones will fracture if they absorb more than 8.0 J of energy. (a) If a car waiting at a stoplight is rear-ended in a collision that lasts for 10.0 ms, what is the greatest speed this car and its driver can reach without breaking neck bones if the driver’s head has a mass of 5.0 kg (which is about right for a 70 kg person)? Express your answer in m/s and in mi/h. (b) What is the acceleration of the passengers during the collision in part (a), and how large a force is acting to accelerate their heads? Express the acceleration in m/s2…arrow_forwardA horizontal force of 80.0 N is applied to a 5.00 kg block as the block slides a distance of 0.800 m along a horizontal floor. The coefficient of kinetic friction between the floor and the block is 0.500. If the block is initially at rest, how fast is it moving at the end of the displacement?arrow_forwardA small block sits at one end of a flat board that is 4.00 m long. The coefficients of friction between the block and the board are μs= 0.450 and μ = 0.400. The end of the board where the block sits is slowly raised until the angle the board makes with the horizontal is α0, and then the block starts to slide down the board. If the angle is kept equal to α0 as the block slides, what is the speed of the block when it reaches the bottom of the board? Express your answer with the appropriate units.arrow_forward
- Gayle runs at a speed of 3.20 m/s and dives on a sled, initially at rest on the top of a frictionless snow-covered hill. After she has descended a vertical distance of 5.00 m, her brother, who is initially at rest, hops on her back and together they continue down the hill. What is their speed at the bottom of the hill if the total vertical drop is med ocum 15.0 m? Gayle's mass is 49.5 kg, the sled has a mass of 5.45 kg and her brother has a mass of 30.0 kg. m/s Need Help? As a result, the bag accelerates from rest to a speed of 1.08 m/s in a distance of 5.05 m. What is the coefficient of kinetic friction between the bag and the ground?arrow_forwardA 10.0-kg block is released from point A in Figure. The track is frictionless except for the portion between B and C, which has a length of 6.00 m. The block travels down the track. Determine the coefficient of kinetic friction between the block and the rough surface between B and C if the block stops exactly at the point C after going through the rough surface.arrow_forward
- A block of mass m = 2kg slides across a flat surface with friction present. Group of answer choicesarrow_forwardAn object with a mass of 1.95 kg is initially at rest upon a horizontal, frictionless surface. An applied force of 3.81 Ni acts on the object for 2.33 s. What is the object's final speed? Enter a number rounded to 2 decimal places and assume the answer has proper SI Units.arrow_forwardA 2.0-kg block was released from rest at point A. It then moves through point B until it finally stops at point C. The plane is inclined at an angle e of 32.0° from the horizontal and the incline stands at a height h of 3.0 m. The coefficient of kinetic friction from point A to B is 0.40. h 8.0 m (a) What is the velocity of the block at point B?
