Concept explainers
(a)
Interpretation:
To write the cathode and anode reaction and over potentials at the electrodes for the given 1.0 M
Concept Introduction:
Species with higher reduction potential or less negative charge undergoes reduction easily than the species having lower reduction potential or more positive charge. It is known as
“Cathode”.
Species with the lower reduction potential or more negative undergoes oxidation more easily than the species with higher reduction potential. This is known as “anode”.
Reduction reaction takes place in anodic center, and the oxidation reaction takes place in cathodic center.
(b)
Interpretation:
To write the cathode and anode reaction and over potentials at the electrodes for the given 1.0 M
(c)
Interpretation:
To write the cathode and anode reaction and over potentials at the electrodes for the given 1.0 M

Chemical Principles: The Quest for Insight
- An electrode is prepared from liquid mercury in contact with a saturated solution of mercury(I) chloride, Hg2Cl, containing 1.00 M Cl . The cell potential of the voltaic cell constructed by connecting this electrode as the cathode to the standard hydrogen half-cell as the anode is 0.268 V. What is the solubility product of mercury(I) chloride?arrow_forwardCalcium metal can be obtained by the direct electrolysis of molten CaCl2, at a voltage of 3.2 V. (a) How many joules of electrical energy are required to obtain 12.0 1b of calcium? (b) What is the cost of the electrical energy obtained in (a) if electrical energy is sold at the rate of nine cents per kilowatt hour?arrow_forwardAn electrolysis experiment is performed to determine the value of the Faraday constant (number of coulombs per mole of electrons). In this experiment, 28.8 g of gold is plated out from a AuCN solution by running an electrolytic cell for two hours with a current of 2.00 A. What is the experimental value obtained for the Faraday Constant?arrow_forward
