Chapter 39.3, Problem 10LO
Summary Introduction

To describe: The strategies used by animals to adjust with challenging temperature changes.

Introduction: In order to survive and function properly animals need to maintain pH and internal temperature within relatively narrow limits. When the internal environment of the body is balanced, it is referred to as homeostasis. The body temperature is maintained within these narrow limits despite the changes in surrounding temperature through a process called thermoregulation. The rate at which the heat is produced and the rate at which the heat is lost from the outside environment determines the body temperature.

Which of the following statements is true regarding the impact of the environment on snake behavior? In wet climates, a snake is more active because it does not lose as much heat via evaporation. In hot weather, a snake is more active because it can gain body heat by conduction. In cold weather, a snake is less active because the food supply is decreased. In dry climates, a snake is less active because there is less moisture in the air.
