Chapter 35, Problem 3ITD
Summary Introduction

To review:

The root biomass among the three tree species differs significantly.

Introduction:

Absorption of water and minerals in plants takes place with the help of the root system. These minerals enter the plant along with water and other enters cells directly. Many of the plants benefit from the fungal associations with mycorrhizae. This fungal biomass increases the root biomass of the plants. The higher root biomass is associated with a higher diversity of plant.

Some plants actually thrive in soils that most plants find challenging.  One example is the California redbud which grows on serpentine soil (a soil type high in toxic magnesium and nickel but low in calcium).  Some of these species even need to be grown in the unusual soils to survive.  Others can tolerate more standard soil conditions.    If you wanted to grow some of these unusual plants in their native soil, what is one risk to you as the gardener?  How does tolerance to such (normally toxic) soil help the plant?
Name the following as soil forming processes: a. Soil erosion b. Formation of humus c. Weathering of sand d. Nutrients absorbed by plant roots e. deposition of organic matter f. Leaching of water along with dissolved ions
We have 2 types of soils. One soil has bulk density of 2.75g/cm^3; second has bulk density of 1.5g/cm^3. What guess will we get from this information about the following soil properties for both soils? a. Soil structure b. Porosity c. Root penetration d. Presence of organic matter
