Concept explainers
Interpretation:
The configuration of the unsaturated enoyl CoA formed by dehydrogenation during a turn of the β-oxidation pathway has to be determined.
Concept introduction:
The β-oxidation pathway is defined as a repetitive series of four biochemical reactions in which acyl CoA is degraded to acetyl CoA by the removal of two carbon atoms at a time. NADH and FADH2 are also produced in this pathway.
The carbon compounds that contain a double bond or triple bond are defined as unsaturated compounds. The configuration is defined as the spatial arrangement of atoms or groups in a molecule.

- The process by which cus fatty acids are converted to trans fatty acids occurs during the hydrolysis process. It arises because a small fraction of the products reform alkenes from a reaction reversal. True or False?arrow_forwardAcetyl CoA is a critical part of oxidative phosphorylation because it is the first step in the Krebs Cycle. If you were starving, Acetyl CoA would be generated from: Chemiosmosis Oxidation of nucleic acids Hydrolysis of pyruvate Reduction of NAD+ to NADH Oxidation of fatty acids Krebs Cycle Glycolysisarrow_forwardIn the breakdown of fatty acids, we see the activation of a carboxylic acid by its conversion to a amine ester alcohol thioester carbonyl aldehydearrow_forward
- How many molecules of NADH and FADH2 are obtained from the β-oxidation of one molecule of a 16-carbon saturated fatty acyl-CoA?arrow_forwardWhich carbon atoms of glucose end up as a carboxyl group in pyruvatearrow_forwardFatty acids and triglycerides are an important source of nutrition and a dense form of stored energy. Digestion of fats yields more energy per gram than digestion of carbohydrates. Each turn on the B-oxidation spiral results in the formation of a new acetyl COA molecule. This molecule can then be used to generate more energy in A) fatty acid synthesis B) ketolysis C) glycolysis D) tricarboxylic acid cycle E) oxidative phosphorylationarrow_forward
