The systematic naming of an organic compound is given by IUPAC nomenclature. The naming of organic compound is done such that the structure of organic compound is correctly interpreted from its name.

Rules for writing IUPAC name from its structural formula are as follows.

The longest carbon chain is identified first.

The next step is to identify the groups attached to the longest chain.

The position, location, and number of the substituent bonded to the carbon chain are then identified.

The prefixes di, tri, tetra are used if more than one substituent of the same type is present.

The substituents are then named in alphabetical order.
