Chapter 2, Problem 13P
ǀ BIO Ouch! Nerve impulses travel at different speeds, depending on the type of fiber through which they move. The impulses for touch travel at 76.2 m/s while those registering pain move at 0.610 m/s. If a person stubs his toe, find (a) the time for each type of impulse to reach his brain, and (b) the time delay between the pain and touch impulses. Assume that his brain is 1.85 m from his toe and that the impulses travel directly from toe to brain.

You are an engineer in charge of designing a new generation of elevators for a prospective upgrade to the Empire State Building. Before the state legislature votes on funding for the project, they would like you to prepare a report on the benefits of upgrading the elevators. One of the numbers that they have requested is the time it will take the elevator to go from the ground floor to the 102nd floor observatory. They are unlikely to approve the project unless the new elevators make the trip much faster than the old elevators.
If state law mandates that elevators cannot accelerate more than 23.90 m/s2 or travel faster than 19.3 m/s, what is the minimum time in which an elevator can travel the 373 m from the ground floor to the observatory floor?
minimum travel time: ?
You step onto a hot beach with your bare feet. A nerve impulse, generated in your foot, travels through your nervous system at an average speed of 110 m/s. How much time does it take for the impulse, which travels a distance of 1.8 m, to reach your brain?
A soccer player kicks a rock horizontally off a 32 m high cliff into a pool of water. If the player hears the sound of the splash 2.72 s later, what was the initial speed given to the rock (in m/s)?
Assume the speed of sound in air is 343 m/s.
m/s
What If? If the temperature near the cliff suddenly falls to 0°C, reducing the speed of sound to 331 m/s, what would the initial speed of the rock have to be (in m/s) for the soccer player to
hear the sound of the splash 2.72 s after kicking the rock?
m/s

Under normal conditions this is not a problem, but when fog rolls in visibility can reduce to only 47 meters. Because fog is a common occurrence in this region, you decide to investigate. The state highway department states that the effective coefficient of friction between a rolling wheel and asphalt ranges between 0.842 and 0.941, whereas the effective coefficient of friction between a skidding (locked) wheel and asphalt ranges between 0.550 and 0.754.
