Interpretation: To determine whether a diluted or concentrated sodium fluoride solution has a higher boiling point.
Concept introduction: Elevation in boiling point is the colligative property of a solution. Colligative properties are those properties of the solution that depends upon the number of solutes and not on the nature of the solute.
Answer to Problem 31LC
Concentrated sodium fluoride will have more boiling point than diluted sodium fluoride.
Explanation of Solution
Diluted solutions are those solutions that have less solute per unit volume whereas, concentrated solutions are those that have more solute per unit volume. Colligative property depends on the number of solutes. Elevation in boiling point increases with the increase in the number of solute particles because more kinetic energy needs to be given in the concentrated solution than in the diluted solution. Hence, the boiling point of concentrated sodium fluoride will be more than that of diluted sodium fluoride.
Concentrated sodium fluoride will have more boiling point than diluted sodium fluoride.
