Radius of water droplet =0.018mm=1.8×105m

Formula used:

For the droplet to remain stationary, the magnitude of the electric force must be the same as the weight of the droplet which is given by,

  FE=qE=mg

  qE=mg(Ne)E=[(4πr33)e]g

  Where,ρ= density of droplet

r = radius of droplet

e = charge of electron

So number of electron is given by: N=4πr3eg3eE

Calculation:

The radius of water (r)=0.018mm

  =0.018mm(103m1mm)=1.8×105m

Electric field E=150N/c

The density of water ρ=1.00×103g/cc

Acceleration due to gravity g=9.8m/s2

The magnitude of electric force on the droplet, FE=|q|E (1)

Here charge on the water droplets is q and E is the electric field.

The weight of the water droplet (w)=mg

Here mass of the droplet (m)=43πr3ρ

Therefore weight of the droplet (w)=(43πr3ρ)g. (2)

Let the number of excess electrons on the water droplet = n

The charge on the droplets q =ne ; here charge of the electron e=1.6×1019C

For the droplet to remain stationary, the magnitude of the electric force on the droplet must be the same as the weight of the droplets. Therefore from equation (1) and (2).
