Consider the structure shown in the following Figure, which was designed to support a 55-kN load. It consists of a beam AB with a 30 × 50-mm rectangular cross section and of a rod BC with a 45-mm-diameter circular cross section. The beam and the rod are connected by a pin at B and are supported by pins and brackets at A and C, respectively. Neglect the mass of the beam and rod.
1. Calculate the reaction supports at A and C. ()
2. Calculate the internal forces of beam AB and rod BC. ()
3. Can rod BC safely support the load to which it will be subjected? (Assume that rod BC is
made of annealed copper with a maximum allowable stress σall = 125 MPa). ()
4. What will be the appropriate diameter of rod BC? (Assume that if rod BC is made of an
aluminum with a maximum allowable stress σall = 155 MPa).
A team of design engineers are designing an amusement park structure as in Figure 2below. The horizontal beam supporting the gondolas at both ends are supported by 2vertical bars, bar EB and bar CF with a cross sectional area of 11,100mm2 and 9,280mm2each. Gondola 1 (left) weighs 380 kN and Gondola 2 (right) weighs 360kN respectively. Due to theweight of both the gondolas, the design team needs to investigate the verticaldisplacements of both ends of the horizontal beam at A and D. You are required to helpthem analyze and calculate the vertical displacement at both ends due to the weight ofthe gondolas.
An aluminum bar having a cross-sectional area of 160 mm2
carries the axialloads at the positions shown in the figure. If E = 70 Gpa, compute the totaldeformation of the bar. Assume that the bar is suitably braced to preventbuckling.
