University campuses are special communities and McMaster University is one of these with approximately 30,000 students, staff, faculty and visitors along with its own network of roads, shuttle bus system, parking lots, power supplies, sewers, lighting and buildings, etc. Special constables are employed by the university to perform specialized security functions on campus that may include the implementation of specific acts, particularly those relevant to campus communities. University special constables play a role in the enforcement of municipal by-laws, and also enforce particular elements of the Criminal Code. Campus special constables may perform investigations that relate to more minor criminal activity, and often act as a liaison between
This paper will discuss the various ethical dilemmas facing school resource officers (SRO). This will include problems with 4th amendment protections of students, interviews and interrogations of juveniles, as well as, privacy issues expected by students and faculty. Other issues to be will also address two sociological theories, the Self Efficacy and the Modeling theory. I will also discuss how school discipline is being reclassified in to criminal behavior resulting in many children being classified as criminals due to minor behavior problems. Finally this paper will discuss the SROs role, should it be public servant, or crime fighter.
As a Deputy Constable our main focus is the civil side of the criminal justice system. As a Deputy, I serve Civil Citations by which a plaintiff gives a defendant notice of suit. My duties as Constable Deputy also extend to the following. Executing and returning writs of possession or restitution, serving orders of protection, serving civil and criminal summons along with subpoenas. In addition, we act as Bailiffs to the courts. As a Constable Deputy we have the same powers as a police officer, however we act within our specific precinct.
I’m applying for the Indiana State Police internship solely because I want to learn more about policing and get a realistic feel about my possible future career. I’m currently studying Criminal Justice at the University of Southern Indiana and I’m also a Volunteer Firefighter at Perry Township Fire Dept. With me currently being a junior in college, I feel that I should know which career path I’m going towards. I’m stuck between wanting to be a Police Officer and wanting to be a career Firefighter. I’ve done two ride alongs within the past two years. One with a Vanderburgh County Sheriff and another with a city officer in Jasper, Indiana. Those ride alongs were somewhat helpful but I’m wanting to gain more experience than just 10 hours in a patrol car. I want to learn all the in’s and out’s including what happens in the office, dispatch, and
This is a great academy for me because it will help know what courses I would like to do and I will learn so much from and there are many reasons why I should be chosen for this academy. Also I feel like this is a once in a lifetime opportunity and this has a lot of advantages and It will benefit me a lot.
The presence of a police department allows students to feel safe. The UCR police department (UCRPD) is located toward the beginning of campus housing. Similar to any other building on campus, the building’s interior can be seen through clear glass. Located near PARKING LOT 24, surrounded by lively green grass, the building is painted white. At the top, a sign read in capital letters, “POLICE.” The sign is identical to any other police stations on television. Then, at the door, printed in bold and capitalized letters on normal printing paper, a sign read, “THE DOOR WILL AUTOMATICALLY CLOSE.” Everything seemed to be in signs as no one was available to instruct people.
In Ontario, we have three different types of police forces. They are the municipal which are the numbered divisions within a city, provincial which is the Ontario Provincial Police, and federal which is the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. Municipal police forces are established by the municipalities and are usually in every major city. If a city has a population of approximately 50 000-100 000, then they usually contract out the policing to the RCMP such as in the case of Burnaby and Northern Vancouver, B.C. Municipal police forces are the most common type of policing found in
According to the University Police Department link on the MTSU website, the campus police are responsible for promoting safety on or about the
On Wednesday, August, 26, 2015, at approximately 6:20 pm, while at work, Auxiliary Police Constable Jesse Grewal (51630) was patrolling The Better living Centre grounds at 195 Princes Boulevard, Toronto. Once on the ground, Auxiliary Police Constable Grewal was displaying signs of a seizure and was rendered unconscious. Auxiliary Police Constable Grewal (51630) was subsequently transported to Toronto Western hospital via ambulance where he was treated by Dr. Lian who advised that
The role of the criminal justice profession is to protect and to serve our society by enforcing the laws that govern us. Those that take the responsibility to defend justice and to uphold the laws that govern us without prejudice are depended on and respected. Our system of criminal justice focuses on the definitions, causes and prevention of crime, along with a legal process that tries to implement methods of treatment and rehabilitation to offenders. The criminal justice system suggests that drug offenders receive treatment through a variety of options, such as sending nonviolent offenders to treatment and using the treatment as a condition of incarceration, probation, or release.
Policing is a dangerous profession. As police officers, we have been entrusted the great responsibility to protect life and property and arrest criminal offenders. “The apprehension of criminal offenders and protection of property must at all times be subservient to the protection of life.” It is our policy to value and preserve human life, to include our own. Efficient and effective use of force can reduce injuries to both suspects and officers. The ultimate goal when applying use of force, is to make an arrest and bring a potentially unsafe situation to a smooth and peaceful conclusion as soon as possible. Many officers preferred that the subject allow himself to be arrested peacefully, but when that is not the case, officers must make
A growing number of entry-level criminal justice practitioners have college degrees. This paper will explore whether or not law enforcement agencies should require applicants to have a post secondary degree as a condition of employment and will college-educated police officers will be resistant to organizational change.
How student’s view their university’s police department is important to maintain positive interactions between the two parties. I have worked with UPD officers quite a bit and I have a positive view of UPD, but I know that many other students do not see them the same way I do. If there were more information on how college students view UPD officers there could be some specific actions taken by UPD to increase their appeal. To figure out how college students view UPD officers, my research question was: How do different subgroups of USD college students see UPD officers?
Police officers have a very reputable job, meaning they must be professional at all times. The job of a police officer is to protect and to serve the public. Since most of their time is spent in the public eye, they are expected to maintain professional behavior. The first step in projecting their professionalism is their dress. They should be dressed neatly,
Policing is a vital and visible component of our criminal justice system. To protect and serve is a basic responsibility of every police department, specifically in Canada. In Canada, citizens have a lot of faith in the police, as they look forward to police for any kind of safety concerns they may have, yet people are also very quick to judge the police. The police play an important role in minimizing threats and maximizing safety of their citizens. The role of the police in our society is shaped by social, economic and political factors.
The earlier development of the law enforcement was developed by a man named Sir Robert Peel also known as the “Father of Modern Policing” (Bennett & Hess, 2007). He was born February 5, 1788 in Chamber Hall near Bury in Lancashire (Bloy, n.d.). He was the one who greatly influenced and set forth the fundamental principles of the police force. He developed an organized force called the London Metropolitan Police in 1829 that protected the people who were victimized due to high unemployment, poverty, and crime. An organization is “an artificial structure created to coordinate either people or groups and resources to achieve a mission or goal” (Bennett & Hess, 2007). The police’s goal is to protect and serve their community. Although the term of a police officer is mixed up with a peace officer “all police officers are peace officers, but all peace officers are not police officers” (Walker & Katz, 2011). The principles that Sir Robert Peel set for the police include:
