Within the piece “A Rose for Emily”, we see an unhinged woman, who we discover at the end of the story, poisoned a man she appeared to be in love with. The character Miss Emily was in a state of mind that prevents normal perception, behavior, or social interaction; seriously mentally ill. Her uneasy attitude spawned from her father who was extremely controlling; never allowing her to be with a man. Even after his death, the oppression she faced with her father never truly left. She would often act strange and not leave the house at all as if her father was still there holding her back.

After the death of her father, Miss Emily met a man by the name of Homer Barron. From the instant they met, a connection was made. Homer Barron’s impact on Miss Emily was undeniable as he was able to finally get her out the …show more content…

Most people believed it was because Homer Barron had mysteriously disappeared and Miss Emily was suffering from loneliness and depression; refusing to leave the house. However, this was not the case as we find out that Miss Emily poisoned Homer Barron and had been lying with his decaying body all those years, herself dying of sickness. I found this ending to be rather surprising, but at the same time I suspected as such. Miss Emily’s words and past foreshadowed her actions towards Homer Barron.

It is evident that Miss Emily’s past influenced her appalling actions at the end of the book. I believe that her father’s oppressive behavior still lingered within her. Her father's impact was so strong that she felt the only way Homer Barron wouldn't exit her life was if he laid with her in his eternal sleep. Furthermore, in the story when the men came to her to speak on her taxes, she kept repeating “I have no taxes in Jefferson. Ask Colonel Sartoris” even though Colonel Sartoris has been dead for some years. Her repeating those lines inevitably foreshadows her
