A comparison of "A Rose for Emily" to a 21st Century Murderer
The short story "A Rose for Emily" is one that tells about a woman who lives a life of secrets, love, and neglect. Living in selective isolation, her mental health closely resembles that of a 21st Century murderer. Emily has the characteristics of a person with a behavioral personality disorder, or schizophrenia by choosing self-isolation, premeditating murder and keeping a trophy.
Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) can be characterized by severe emotional dysregulation and affective instability (Fenske, Sabrina, et al, p 10). Emily is void of emotion, she fails to outwardly display either sadness or how the ideas others have of her affect her directly. However, she begins to notice when people start to get suspicious of why she has not yet buried her father. Her thought pattern is calculated much like some of the 21st Century serial killers, including Jeffery Dahmer, who, for example, also expressed characteristics of BPD.
Emily lives in self isolation or what was perceived to be isolation. The only person Emily came in daily contact with was her servant. Isolation exacerbated the reality that Emily was truly alone. When left to themselves in isolation, many killers, often live out their world in a fantasy. Fantasy serves to relieve anxiety or fear and most people have them to one extent or another (Douglas, J.E., Burgess, and Ressler, R.K. 1995.) We may not know what really fed Emily's behavior, some theories are that she could have suffered from separation anxiety due to her father's death, others suggest that she was suffering from a form of neglect. This can be concluded by her longing for a companion.
It is believed that she would want to keep Homer Barron for herself, like a prize or trophy, and even though her father believed that no one would ever be good enough for her, Homer could never be hers because of his interests in young men. So, Emily would, devise a plan to murder Homer, she feared that should would be left alone again and allowing the townspeople to believe the two are married. The acts committed by Emily are comparable to those of Jeffery Dahmer in that he kept his victims as trophies. According to Encyclopedia
