“North and South Korea, which have technically been at war for the last 65 years, are again acting like it.” (npr.org) They’ve always been fighting each other, and this is another one of their battles. It all started when there was an explosive from landmines “in the DMZ, which is the sort of de facto border that separates North and South Korea, which injured two South Korean soldiers that the South has blamed on North Korea but, of course, North Korea has not apologized for.” (npr.org) That angered South Korea which lead them to start anti-North propaganda broadcasting through loudspeakers. Consequently, both sides have been arguing at the DMZ. Then, everything was settled when both sides made an agreement; however, no one really knows what Kim Jong Un will do. As a result, the United States are hesitant, so the “top U.S. commanders reviewed the U.S. war plan for defending South Korea in case there was a sudden indication that North Korea was going to begin a war.” (cnn.com) They are on the watch for movement for activation of air defences and artilleries. Currently, South Korea is low on missionary materials to fight North Korea, so South Korea is going to need the U.S.’s help. North Korea has half a million more armed forces, 10,000 more artillery pieces, a thousand more tanks, and etc. This can be very dangerous for South Korea if North attacks. It can also be dangerous if U.S. helps South Korea meaning North Korea can attack U.S. Immigration has
The northern border is known as the DMZ (demilitarized zone) it is the most heavily armed border in the world. At 2.5 miles wide and 150-miles long the heavily mined and guarded area has served as a buffer zone since the cease fire in 1953.(3) The united States helps to guard the DMZ and protect the ROK with approximately 30,000 troops and an arsenal of military equipment. The country of South Korea is unable to maintain their own Nuclear weapons and relies on the US Militaries nuclear weapons program to match North Koreas Nuclear weapons program. Although the ROK army is well equipped and well trained it lacks the sheer numbers and nuclear capabilities to match North Korea. Therefore the ROK relies heavily on the United States military assistance. However with the ROK’s consistent progression and strong economy it’s only a matter of time before the ROK will no longer need the help of the USA. (4)
It should be noted that North Korea’s communist ally and veto holder, the Soviet Union, was absent from this meeting in protest of the communist China’s exclusion from the Security Council. A United Nations defense force led by the United States, came to the of South Korea and in a rapid counter-offensive, they were able to push the North Koreans back past the 38th parallel close to Yalu River along the border with China. Warnings from Communist China that it would intervene should UN forces push past the 38th parallel were ignored by UN Commanders and true to their word, the Chinese Intervened on behalf of the North pushing UN and ROK forces back to the 38th parallel. In 1953, the war ended with an armistice that restored the border between the Koreas near the 38th Parallel and created the Korean Demilitarized Zone, a 4 Km wide buffer zone between the two Koreas (Edwards 2005).
One of the significant events were at Yeonpyeong in 1999 and 2002. There were two battles that were fought between South Korea and North Korea. Tens of people died and injured from the battle. Those were little combats compared to Korean War, but these battles were telling that two Korea were still in war. In East Asia peninsula, North Korea and South Korea were confronting due to North Korea’s intimidation on bombing. North Korea’s Kim Jong Un said that the modern war is artillery war. The tension among both Korea and United States was really intense in that it is almost the moment of rising of the war. North Korea is threatening America on nuclear bombing in that United Nation is strongly corresponds on their actions. Actually, both sides are almost got ready on the war and it seems to occur. Kim Jong Un was looking for the place to bomb. There were also threats that occurred recently due to nucleic bombing. North Korea is keep doing the nuclear test by firing a rocket to the space as satellite. This is nominal satellite in which they are actually doing a nuclear test. By using nuclear power, North Korea wants to get the initiative from South Korea and attract China to be their
After all accusations that North Korea made against the South Korea, the U.S Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has backed South Korea’s call for North Korea “to come forward with the facts about this act of aggression and above all, stop its belligerence and threatening behaviour.” U.S President Barack Obama made a decision according to South Korea concern adopting a newly aggressive military attitude towards its neighbour; he had directed military commanders to work with South Korean troops to make sure readiness and to deter future aggression from North Korea.
There has been many assumptions about a North Korean war with the United States and even though nothing has happened yet we should all be prepared for what can happen. The United States getting involved with North Korea would be catastrophic because there would be several deaths. According to an article written by John Haltiwanger,“ The last time the U.S. and North Korea went to war- from 1950 to 1953- it’s estimated roughly because 2.5 million Korean people lost their lives. So imagine how many more people will die if we were to go to war and if there were to be a war the U.S. would be sending a strong message to North Korea because this would show that they would go through anything to protect their country and that they will fight for what they believe is right. War would not be the best idea because innocent people will be affected by it. Both United States and North Korea would be wasting a lot of money on this war. Not only that but also a war with the type of nuclear weapons that North Korea will use can lead to the end of the world. Meaning that there could be a global nuclear war.
Since the 1950’s North Korea has posed as dangerous threat to The United States and its allies. With North Korea development of Nuclear arms and its consistent hostile rhetoric and actions towards the United States. With the North Korea’s development of a long range ICBM, more now than ever the United States has been put into a position where its and many of its
Communism has been a global problem for decades, and has caused a wide array of issues. The Soviet Union and China were the main Communist threats post-World War II. The Soviets were the biggest threat, without their influence, China would not have become a Communist nation. North Korea was supported by the Soviet Union after the Japanese lost World War II. They adopted a Communist government called the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea and was ruled under Kim Il-sung. North Korea invaded South Korea, an authoritarian country, which drew involvement from the United States, and in general, the United Nations. US involvement in Korea is debatebly because of the rising threat of global Communism and the attempt of North Korea taking South Korea.
Background: Ever since the presidency of Harry Truman, we have been constantly involved in foreign conflicts due to fear of the spread of communism. As a consequence of the Cold War between the United States and the Soviet Union, Korea was divided into two governments. During Mr. Truman’s presidency, the spread of communism was increasing in tension due to the North Korean invasion of South Korea. The United States believed that it was not in its best interests to let Korea fall to communist power. As a result, the U.S. joined the war in efforts to stop the downfall of South Korea. The north koreans received aid from communist China and the war went on until the Korean Armistice Agreement was signed. This agreement set up a demilitarized zone
Previously, the United States had created a defense perimeter that bordered Korea in order to protect Japan from communism. The US saw North Korea’s invasion as a direct threat so the country immediately sent 250,000 men to try to reunify Korea. Near the beginning of the conflict, North Korea pushed the South Koreans all the way to the southern border of Korea with the help of Soviet soldiers. In response the United States sent more soldiers and began nuclear threats. We were able to push North Korea back across the original border and end the conflict with a
Pyongyang and Beijing have been having a rough time especially after China arrested Zhou Yongkang, who was China’s third most powerful politician and when Jang Song-thaek, who was the second powerful man in North Korea, was executed. Since these men were both in charge of relations between Pyongyang and Beijing, North Korea and China were left with no way to calm the rising tensions between them. Now that Russia and China are focusing on their own struggles, they aren’t able to continue protecting Pyongyang. With North Korea fearing attack, there was a need to gain a new political relationship that could help North Korea’s economic recovery and guarantee survival---this being the United States.
The thought of nuclear warfare with North Korea or any other hostile country is very disturbing. It is good to know that the U.S. has a few allies that can help us out if disaster does strike. I hope that this claim made by North Korea is untrue and they do not have access to very lethal devices for a war. Thank you for
The Korean War has been going on since 1950 when soldiers from the North Korean army invaded South Korea over the 38th parallel. Kim Jong Un has made the Korean War worse over the years with threats of nuclear strikes against the United States and South Korea. It also said that nuclear war is necessary and that Tokyo would be the first city to be hit. North Korea has 24 million people living on its tiny landmass. With this there is a difference in economies on the peninsula. North Korea has taken more of a communist approach to economies while South Korea has taken up free-market enterprise.
The Republic of Korea (ROK) and US troops were pushed back to the “Pusan Perimeter”
While talks of a cease-fire had been ongoing for two years, an armistice agreement was reach in July of 1953. It was not easy getting to this agreement. The main point of contention was the repatriate of prisoners of war. This was an issue because many of the prisoners captured by UN and South Korean forces did not want to return to North Korea. This was absolutely not acceptable by China and North Korea. Finally the two sides came to an agreement. With U.S. Army Lieutenant General William Harrison, Jr. representing the United Nations Command, and North Korean General Nam Il representing the Korean People 's Army, and the Chinese People’s Volunteer Army, they signed the Korean Armistice Agreement on July 27th of 1953. The armistice was designed to “Insure a complete cessation of hostilities and of all acts of armed force in Korea until a final peaceful settlement is achieved.” It is well known that this is not this case today. Officially, there is still an ongoing war between North and South Korea. The peaceful settlement was supposed to be the topic at an international conference the following summer, but it just got pushed aside and here we are today, still no official peace agreement. Additionally, the armistice set up the official demilitarized zone (DMZ), placed a cease-fire, and repatriated prisoners of war. The demilitarized zone is 160 miles long spanning the width of the peninsula, and it is 2.5 miles wide. Moreover, it is the most heavily militarized border in the
At the beginning, our response to North Korea’s HEU and plutonium programs was very hostile and involved condemning them. Eventually, we took little baby steps to ease the tension. We also agreed to talk to them, but limited the things we could talk about with them. At the very time all of this chaos is happening, our relationship with the South Korea is reaching an all time low.
