After World War 1, America had to demobilize and revert back to a peace time economy. During the 1920’s, it was viewed as a prosperous economy since there was a new labor force due to demobilization, new inventions, and a new infrastructure. Also moral spirits were high since America along with the Allied Powers defeated Germany and the Great War was finally over. However, America began making many economic policies and decisions that will eventually lead up to the Great Depression.

Rarely has the world seen such a unique decade in time as the Roaring Twenties. It was an age of prosperity and change. The United States experienced a recession that was followed by a period of unlimited prosperity. Although the United States encountered both positive and negative experiences, it proved to be very influential in the future. The 1920's were definitely "Roaring" in more ways than one. There were major changes in American Society during the 1920's that took place. Many new industries emerged during this decade that influenced society and the American way of life. The 1920’s are commonly referred to as the Roaring Twenties. Many factors during the time played significant roles in earning the decade this name. Economic conditions and developments in the arts and entertainment were some of the most impacting among these factors. Economic conditions and developments in the arts and entertainment helped create the reputation of the 1920’s as the Roaring Twenties. Economic conditions gave people a feeling of economic prosperity. They also allowed people to buy a lot of things on credit. Developments in the arts and entertainment created a culture of free expression by granting women the ability to express their opinions more clearly than they were able to in years prior and encouraging jazz and dancing.

In 1919, World War I had finally come to an end, leaving most of the world in a post war depression. However, in countries like Canada, the decade ahead would be filled with amazing growth and change in many ways. The 1920s were an exciting time in Canada because of the economic prosperity, technological, social and cultural revolutions and growing political responsibility and change in policy that country experienced. These economic, social and political changes really made the 1920s in Canada “roar”.

The 1920s “roared” for technology in Canada. New technological development was happening very fast in Canada. The first piece of evidence for this can be found in the radio. The 1920s in Canada saw the first commercial radio station in the world set up in Montreal. Over the rest of the decade, Canadians saw radio stations set up across the country, as well as new forms of media entertainment, and cheaper and easier versions of the radio. This made the radio very popular with Canadians, and allowed them to have easier access to information and entertainment. In addition, few Canadians had telephones in 1920, but by 1929 three out of four families had one which shows how it improved communication and made it easier to connect with other people.

The Roaring Twenties were a time of new behaviors, attitudes, and freedoms which were all presented during the Prohibition. The Roaring Twenties were an era of social, political, and dramatic change. During this age, freedoms were expanded yet, in some cases, they were diminished. Prohibition was an enormous part of this era. Prohibition was ratified as the 18th Amendment in 1919, banning the manufacture and sale of alcohol. The three main contributions from Prohibition were: bootlegging, organized crime, and the failure of Prohibition. Prohibition very much contributed to the atmosphere of the Roaring Twenties in a detrimental way to society by creating a period of time in which even the average citizen broke the law.

There is a controversial debate about the 1920s, whether it was “roaring” or whether is was destitute. In the perspective of some historians, the 1920s brought a rapid increase in urbanization and boom in the economy, however, these historians fail to see the evident terrors that the 1920s brought. The positive uproar on the 1920s did not stand a chance against the rising negative roar of residential schools, the Stock Market Crash, and credit debt. Due to these tragic events, 1920s was brought a dark and negative atmosphere rather than one of contentment.

The Roaring Twenties were a time of prosperity and luxury for almost all Canadian citizens, it was a time where Canada changed saw the birth of many new technologies and the birth of a new culture. Roaring in the sense of the Roaring Twenties means that things were fun, new, exciting, and that people were having fun. The Roaring Twenties were truly a roaring decade in Canadian history, this was due to the post war economic boom in Canada which lead to people having more freedoms, and money to do what they wished with. People were also starting to invest more in luxuries helping businesses and keeping the economy running smoothly. The Roaring Twenties also gave rise to flappers. Whether or not the term 'Roaring Twenties' is an adequate description of the character of Australian society from 1920 to 1929 depends on the circumstances of the Australian population in this decade, because 'Roaring' implies the 1920's were full of dramatic social changes, which may have came about from spontaneous economical or political incidences and new inventions. In the 1920s Australian politics was dominated by the conservative parties and, despite some industrial discontent and hardship, the economy was prosperous and expanding. Over the past (almost) hundred years, society and education have both changed drastically. Typically, the things that have happened in history, such as wars, technological advances, and changes in culture, changed education as a result. Some of these changes include popular culture in the 1920s, economic factors in the 1930s, military intervention in the 1940s, Sputnik in the 1950s, and racial issues in the 1960s. One theme of education is that it has gradually become more important over the years. Before high school diplomas could be rare, and today most high school graduates go to college in the United States.

Post-war years have significant impacts on a society’s economy, bringing an abundance of celebration, cherished moments and highlighting the end of the plagued events of war and loss. With the end of such an afflicted time period, the arrival of solidarity and unification in society usually follows. The Roaring Twenties accomplished many positive changes in Canadian society, building the path it needs to follow to become a great nation and progress into the future. The time period was regarded as a time of excitement and prosperity concerning the fads, fashions, and entertainment, as well as the freedom many people gained with the end of the war. Furthermore, the Roaring Twenties can also be seen as a time of positive change due to a variety of factors such as Canada’s developing autonomy and political relationship with Britain, pushing Canada to become an independent nation. Another factor would be the Canadian industries and economy that flourished during the 1920s which allowed many Canadian businesses to prosper and enabled Canadians to acquire and enjoy an improved quality of life. Finally, the change in societal status and role of women established the starting point of gender equality between men and women, as well as the recognition of the various contributions that women were capable of bringing to society.

Although our current generation has vastly progressed and advanced since the “roaring 20s,” there are countless attributes in which both eras directly resemble one another. These periods were the focal points of advancements in technology, women’s rights, and culture. The groundbreaking advances in technology for both generations had sparked a whole new outlook on our nation’s future ahead. Women’s rights were also a major turning point for education and the workforce, both in the 1920s and the modern day. Lastly, the influence of many individuals in the cultural communities of the “roaring 20s” and the modern day have greatly impacted the foundations of art, music, and sports. Without a doubt, the way of life for individuals in both eras have extremely similar concepts, where both seem to focus on establishing a progressive and strongly developing future.

Throughout history, Canada’s identity has changed in many ways and there have been many historical events that have greatly shaped and impacted Canada’s history and identity. The Women’s Movement and women’s contribution in the past and throughout history has had the greatest impact on shaping Canada into what it is today. Among many identifying qualities like being multicultural, bilingual, and world leaders, Canada is also country that has changed immensely in the way of becoming a country that has learned to accept women, move towards providing them with equal opportunities and treating them equally. Through economic, social and political movements and actions, the contribution from women and the women’s movement have increased, changed and improved women’s rights and equality greatly. Women worked to create independence and equality economically through their contributions to war on the homefront in WWI resulting in greater workplace equality, socially through the actions of the Flappers in the 1920’s giving women currently, the confidence and strength that they need to speak up, and politically, through the work of the Suffragists including the Famous 5 to allow women to have the same political rights as men.

The Roaring Twenties was a time of fun and delight the stock market was booming and America was thriving while other countries were experiencing turmoil in aftermath of the First World War. Returning from the horrors of war, writers were inspired by romance and the riches America had. Using their unique creative expression, many of the writings from the Twenties were a commentary on social life, the good and bad. Each story holds a different theme, different message, and different romance, however, each piece of work was individualistic to the writer, and to his experiences. America was entering a new era, and literature was at the forefront to change. In the Twenties literature was booming with authors such as F. Scott Fitzgerald, T.S. Eliot, William Falkner, Langston Hughes, and Ernest Hemmingway all found their spotlight each with an original work of literature that got the human race not only entertained but aware.

When I think about how people in their twenties behave and conduct themselves, I´m sincerely shock over the fact that I do not fit into that category. I mean, like every twenty something, I do love the occasional drinks, parties, craziness and laziness, but over all I would not consider myself to be the “typical” twenty something year old, and the more I think about this, I realize that I never truly fitted in one specific category. Well, I guess I have my parent to thank for that. By turning out the way that I did, I have to say that my parent did a wonderful job raising me.
