The duties of a social worker vary based on their field but one duty all social workers have in common is their determination to help someone who cant necessarily help themselves. There are several different fields of social work one in particular stands out to me – Medical social work. Medical social work stands out to me because overall I’m curious of how they would differ from any other social worker. Therefore I will explore their history, duties, education requirements, as well as whom the population they serve and challenges faced.
History
Although in the early twentieth century social work was established. Medical Social work wasn’t established until the early 1900s. Britain and Ireland are the first nations who acknowledged the need of Medical Social Workers. Medical social workers in Britain and Ireland were known as Almoners, or Hospital Almoners. In Ireland, Dr. Ella Webb can be considered the first lady of the medical social work world. In 1918, Webb established a dispensary for sick children in the Adelaide Hospital in Dublin.
In 1945, the Institute of Almoners in Britain was formed. By 1964 the institution was renamed as the Institute of Medical Social Workers. The Institute became one of the founder organizations of the British Association of Social Workers, which was formed in 1970. By the early 1900s Richard Clarke Cabot created the position of Hospital Social worker or better known as Medical Social Worker in Massachusetts General Hospital, which was
