Taking a Look at Skateboarding

Now before I jump into this essay, I will first give you a background on the history of the sport. The original concept that the snowboard is based upon is the “snurfer”. Developed on Christmas Day, 1965 by Sherman Poppen in Muskegon, Michigan. In 1968, Tom Sims furthered the sport by developing the very first snowboard. Then in 1977 Jake Burton Carpenter developed the first bindings and changed the sport forever.

Skateboarding has rich history of innovation and is full of intriguing stories. Many of these stories are documented in this book in great detail. However, this essay will provide you with an overview of the last nine decades.

Skateboarding has been around since 1944. Initially, created as a crate with wheels and a bar used as a handle bar, the idea was slowly being more refined. Woman’s Army Corps Betty Magnuson, reported seeing French children riding on wooden boards with rollerblade wheels attached to them which would imply that the idea has been played around with but never capitalized upon. From crate boxes with handle bars, to popsicle shaped boards with specialty made wheels backed with a massive culture, skateboarding has become a popular industry.

The norms of skateboarding are more masculinity, participant control and the de- emphasizing of competition. Participant control is that there is not any referee, no penalties or set plays. With the lack of formality, it allowed them to show who they really are. De-emphasizing of competition means to reduce the need of competing against others.

Snowboarding has an amazing background and explanation of how it came to be. It all started with the people who surfed and skateboarded. They wanted something similar to do in the winter. Sherman Poppen was the creator of the snurfer (an early snowboard) in 1965. Sherman was one of the skateboarders who wanted to surf but lived in Michigan. One day he nailed two skis together and attached a rope with a handle to the front thus creating the snurfer. Sherman then called his friends, who were engineers for the Brunswick Corporation and asked them to make some of the snurfers. The Brunswick Corporation made skis, bowling balls, bowling alleys, and bowling pins. The snurfer took the world by storm, but people wanted a safe way to ride. Eventually Jake Burton Carpenter started making a new model called the ski board and this was the first company for snowboards. Skim boarding has been around for a long time dating back to the year 1920s mainly in Laguna Beach CA. People began getting more and more interested in this sport and started making skim boards from plywood and used these boards when they went to the beach to enjoy themselves. Furthermore the whole world developed interest in this sport and not only a particular section of people. Also the boards that people manufactured themselves were not in good shape and size, this lead to people not being able to control their board. One day i was late to school and the only option was my brothers skateboard. At the time I didn’t know how to ride a skateboard or let alone know how to do tricks on it. I ended up skating to school. I fell a couple of times but I made it to school with some scrapes and bruises. After that i skated everyday just to make sure i wouldn't fall like the last time. After a couple of weeks I got the hang of it and started doing tricks on it. Unfortunately, the first have my skateboard there so i can skate to school and not be late. Even though I fell and it may have seemed bad that I fell off the skateboard, I learned how to skate which was a ¨blessing in disguise¨.
