Evolution of Skateboarding Skateboarding has been around since 1944. Initially, created as a crate with wheels and a bar used as a handle bar, the idea was slowly being more refined. Woman’s Army Corps Betty Magnuson, reported seeing French children riding on wooden boards with rollerblade wheels attached to them which would imply that the idea has been played around with but never capitalized upon. From crate boxes with handle bars, to popsicle shaped boards with specialty made wheels backed with a massive culture, skateboarding has become a popular industry.
Originating in California as a way surfers could be able to surf when the waves were flat. The original creator isn’t known as it seems that everybody seemingly came together with the idea at approximately the same time. The first manufactured skateboards were ordered in a Los Angeles surf shop in California. The shop owner Bill Richard organized with Chicago Roller Skate Company to produce skate wheels to be used with the boards. Towards the later 60’s, there was a trend of shops dedicated to skateboarding or “Street surfing” referred to at the time. The evolution of the board went from a rectangle piece of wood to resembling a surf board. As skateboarding continued to become more popular, the first skateboarding magazine, “The

The history of skateboarding still hasn’t ended though as many more competitors such as hover boards or rip-sticks are changing the game of personal entertainment and transportation. With such a strong cultural background it’ll be almost impossible to knock, what monolithic skateboarding has become, out of the competition. Many more revolutions of skateboarding and the board itself are still in the future as more technology comes out, such as stronger boards, more durable trucks and even the skate parks
Skateboarding has rich history of innovation and is full of intriguing stories. Many of these stories are documented in this book in great detail. However, this essay will provide you with an overview of the last nine decades.
Snowboarding has an amazing background and explanation of how it came to be. It all started with the people who surfed and skateboarded. They wanted something similar to do in the winter. Sherman Poppen was the creator of the snurfer (an early snowboard) in 1965. Sherman was one of the skateboarders who wanted to surf but lived in Michigan. One day he nailed two skis together and attached a rope with a handle to the front thus creating the snurfer. Sherman then called his friends, who were engineers for the Brunswick Corporation and asked them to make some of the snurfers. The Brunswick Corporation made skis, bowling balls, bowling alleys, and bowling pins. The snurfer took the world by storm, but people wanted a safe way to ride. Eventually Jake Burton Carpenter started making a new model called the ski board and this was the first company for snowboards. Jake Burton was a Stockbroker who fell in love with snowboarding and decided to take the risk and start making them. He became the founder of the
Skateboarding was probably born sometime in the late 1940s or early 1950s when surfers in California wanted something to surf when the waves were flat. These first skateboarders started with wooden boxes or boards with roller skate wheels attached to the bottom. The boxes turned into planks,
Bored Americans who had way too much time on their hands created snowboarding. In the decade of the ‘60s, snowboarding was born, getting more interesting as skateboarders and surfers joined the early developers of the sport. As the sport gained popularity, it also gained it’s haters- mainly skiers.
Originally made for surfers, the board was meant to act as a surfboard riding waves, but for pavement. In the 1960’s companies began to mass-produce these boards due to the spike in popularity. Some of the more earlier surf skaters were; Mark Richards, Bruce Logan, Torger Johnson, and Dannel Bearer (Skateboarding History). The first trick called the “Kick tail” which was established during the 1970’s as well as Urethane wheels, which provided more traction, speed, and displayed innovation (Skateboarding History). In continuation, skate parks, pros, skate magazines, and movies arose in quantity. In the 1980’s more style of skating was introduced, street style. Like the great awakening, skaters began to build their own ramps and rails to skate. The trend topic for attire was the infamous baggy pants, shirts, and retro shoes. Skateboarding finally hit exposure when they attended the first X Games. This rejuvenated skating from an underground sport to a spectator sport. The skaters who attended the X Games also get paid money that ranges from 1,000 to 10,000 a month (Skateboarding History,). These now so called “Pros” received their possessions based on wins, talent, placement in competition, and the quantity of contest they participate
Although Tony Hawk is one of the greats, he never street skated, However Ryan Allen Sheckler was born and bred, living and loving the art of street skating. It all began when this young man discovered his father skateboard at eighteen months of age. He pulled off his first ollie by the age of four and landed his first kickflip by the age of six. At the age of seven he got a mini-ramp in the backyard and began skating every day.
Peralta shows several members of the Z-Boys explain through expert interviews, the arduous task of creating skateboards, as commercial skateboards were hard to find. Their skateboards used clay wheels, which would “lock up” and injure the rider if they turned too hard or hit a pebble on the road. This did not have any real negative effects on the Z-Boys and they continued to use this particular design until the invention of urethane wheels. Another example of the Z-Boys ingenuity is their incorporation of surfing into skateboarding. The Z-Boys all came from surfing backgrounds and incorporated these styles into their skateboarding. This emulation of “surfing on asphalt waves” would continue to used as the basic skateboarding style of the
Snowboarding is a sport that originated from two pieces of wood. One day tom sims was looking to make a gift for his daughter and he made the snowboard out of two skis. Once other kids saw it, others wanted one. Tom sims ended up making it into a business and selling them from his garage. Then other people heard of the ideas and began to make them. When others made them that was when it started to become more popular. The origin of snowboarding is characterized by, when it was created, who it was created by, and how it was made.
Hockey is a sport that has evolved for generations into the American culture. There is evidence that the first skates are from around 3,000 BC and were made of animal bone. A more complicated version of the skates was engineered by the Dutch to solve the problem of the skates falling off. These were the first wooden skates. Unfortunately, the wooden skates did not glide well on the ice and soaked up the water (Ice Hockey).
First you will need a skateboard. The best place to start is at your local skate shop, or a big skate store like Zoomies. It's a lot better if you go to your local skate shop because it's better to help out local shops. At most skate shops, they have full complete boards that will run you around 80-100 dollars, and they are setup for beginners. You can also buy the parts yourself. It will cost the same, but there are more customisations you can do. You never want to go to Walmart, Target or Kmart to get a skateboard, because they are made out of cheap woods, plastic wheels
Snowboarding has came along was a was for how it was in 1960s and 1970s it was a skateboard with out wheels it was controlled by rope so you can turn with it and the snowboards did not have binding on it yet. As the snowboarding has been the fastest growing sport in the US there is over 7.2 million and rising. When people go snowboarding they should keep in mind that snowboarding is a risk. When the winter Olympic games snowboarding and skiing can go in the Olympic games and do all this can do to get a medal for doing nice tricks or flips in the air. Snowboarding has it own culture and it own language and its own style after all this years.
Around the time of the 1940’s was when the first ever skateboard was made. In the early 1940’s and 1950’s many surfers in California wanted something to do when the waves were flat which mean, they weren’t able to surf. The people who supposedly came up with the idea were a few surfers who wanted to be able to do something similar as they did in the water. Skateboarding history still has a mysterious origin. No one to this day knows who actually invented the skate board. Several people have claimed to have made the skateboard but nothing has been proven. In 1965 skate boarding’s popularity began to reach its’s top.
The main idea of my project was to bring awareness to the public about skateboarding culture and some of the history behind it. Currently, skateboarding is big in pop-culture and is considered a “cool” thing to do; however, not very long ago that was not the case. Skateboarding was something done by outsiders. It was something that losers, freeks and geeks did. It was the exact opposite of cool. The passionate words of pro skateboarder Jeff Grosso paints a perfect picture of what skateboarding means to real skateboarders and how it is done for the love of it, not because it is “trending.”
Skateboards are a great form of transportation for students who live near the campus and for students to travel in between classes. Skateboards are light objects to carry around, and it does not take a lot of space when placing it on the floor. Many students prefer to use skateboards over bicycles, because it is more convenient to ride and less expensive to replace. Skateboard does not have many mechanical issues unlike bicycles. However, some students do not understand the danger they can promote while riding the skateboards in campus without even knowing it. We need to implement an atmosphere where the skateboarders and students are both welcome and feel safe in the campus. One of the benefit of teaching students the following rules is that,
