The Renaissance is very different from other time periods. No one will really knows the certain date or the ending of the Renaissance. Most scholars still till this day reconsider if the Renaissance was an actual time period or if it was just an extension of the Middle Ages. The Renaissance is a period in Europe, from the 14th to the 17th century, considered the bridge between the Middle Ages and modern history. It started as a cultural movement in Italy in the Late Medieval period and later spread to the rest of Europe, marking the beginning of the Early Modern Age. The Renaissance changed the view of man on the world from how man viewed the world during the middle ages. The purpose of this essay is to show how the Renaissance changed the way man viewed the world. The world was changed in the views of Art, Literature, and Science.

The Italian Renaissance had two distinct periods during its lifetime. The first being the “Early Renaissance”, which took place between the late 13th and the early 14th centuries. The second period was known as the “High Renaissance”, which took place during the 15th and 16th centuries. These two periods had very distinct foundations and styles behind the art and architecture of their respective periods. The Early Renaissance revived many old themes which later became the foundations for the High Renaissance. While the High Renaissance strayed from previous traditions and had its own form of art and essentially perfected early themes and styles of art and included more scientific/mathematic components.

The Renaissance period is known for the revival of the classical art and intellect born in ancient Greece and Rome. The Renaissance is also a time that is marked by growth, exploration, and rebirth. The Italian Renaissance started in Florence and progressively made its way into Venice and then into the great city of Rome. During the Renaissance, Rome was home to some of the most renowned works of art and the finest architectural masterpieces in the world - too many that still holds true today. Along with the delicate architecture and grand artistry, Rome was also home to a mixture of people and cultures. It is in this cultural context and through the book A Street Life in Renaissance Rome: A Brief History with Documents, that understanding how men, woman, and specifically Jews and Christians lived in Rome becomes important to better understand this period of renewal.

The Middle Ages lasted from 500 CE to the early 1300’s. It was a time of poverty, disease, and religion. After the Middle Ages ended, Europe was during a time period called the Renaissance. The Renaissance lasted from 1300-1700. People in the Renaissance had a limited education, but as it grew, it introduced a movement called humanism (Background Essay). Humanism praised the beauty and intelligence of an individual (Background Essay). The Renaissance ended up being a time of evolution and these two time periods changed the world for the better. Artists such as Michelangelo, Botticelli, Da Vinci, and Raphael are some of the greats and are looked at for standards. But what about the artists whose lives are mysteries, and their works that were influenced by the greats? These artists hold just as much importance in the history of art as do the artist’s whose names can be recalled off the top of an average person’s head. During the sixteenth century things began to change in the art world, and that change was the Baroque. This new style of art brought a revolution to how subject matter was painted, it brought upon “… a radical reconsideration of art and its purposes…” (249) and how artists of all ranks could learn to paint the up and coming style of Baroque.

The Italian Renaissance was a time for great cultural change and achievements, which began in Italy approximately during the 13th century and lasted up until the 16th century. It marked the transition between the Dark Ages and Early Modern Europe. The European Renaissance originated in Central Italy, and centered in the city of Florence.i The distinctive characteristics of northern Italian states such as art, literature, philosophy, and culture produced an atmosphere of learning and artistic expression.

Historians find it difficult to establish a true starting point for the Renaissance within the Middle Ages. One of the most impactful events on what would become the Renaissance was the Black Plague and its impact on the living conditions of people in Europe. The Plague provided two issues which brought the Renaissance, a widespread decrease in population and a wider spread of distrust for the church. After the end of the plague, a rise and change in education, epitomized by humanism, provides the second spark of the Renaissance. Humanism brought focus on the current time on Earth, a break from the church’s focus on the afterlife, as well as the newly formed liberal education. The Renaissance, a time defined as the rebirth of classical ideals, occurred in Italy between 1350 and 1600. Spreading quickly throughout Europe, with the innovation of the printing press, it caused rippling effects. The Renaissance ultimately altered the aged education of theology from the Dark Ages and renewed it with studies of more ancient, classic works. Classic art and literature grew extremely popular, contrasting the lack of interest in them before. Many artists became prominent advocates for the revival of the ideals of the classical past. The artists, using their masterpieces, tremendously determined how modern historians view the era. While several aspects of the Renaissance contributed and influenced the time, artists like Michelangelo Buonarroti, Leonardo da Vinci, and Raffaello Sanzio had a stronger effect on and are greater representations of the time.

During the 14th century, Italy was divided into many self-governing city sates. Florence, an independent republic and third largest city in Europe at the time, was the motherland of the Italian Renaissance. This was an enlightening time of “rebirth” that began directly after the Middle Ages (History.com Staff). Florence was the birthplace of the Renaissance due to its location, prosperity, and cultural amalgamation.

The revival of the art, literature, and religious ideas during the Renaissance contributed to the growth of human knowledge, skills, and beliefs. Many social, political, and religious changes took place during the 14th to 16th centuries for this to occur. Humanist thinkers had a significant contribution towards the Renaissance of prevailing ideas and beliefs in Europe during the time period that affected the evolution of the western worldview. The new ideas in art and literature during the Renaissance strongly impacted the social structure of Europe that affected the western worldview of that time.

Every era in the human history changed the society as a whole. However, there is one that most influenced each of the aspects of people’s lives, and it was the era of the Renaissance. The period made culture, view of the world, and science different from what they were like before. The era of the Renaissance is deliberated by many as "the rebirth" or “the age of Enlightenment.”

The Renaissance began around the fourteenth century and created a “rebirth” of cultural ideals. The Renaissance was a period when ideas began to move away from the restrictive ideas of the Middle Ages. “The period can be described as the rise of humanism, which was an intellectual movement that emphasized secular ideas found in literature from Ancient Greece and Rome” (Atkinson). One of the most important newfound ideas during the Renaissance was individualism. Unlike the Middle Ages, the Renaissance brought new interest in art. The religious hierarchy became less important while people became more curious about the capabilities of man.

The 14th, 15th and part of 16th century was a glorious time for Europe, it was the reformation of many old ideas and the formation of many new, this was called the Renaissance. The Renaissance brought many changes to Europe, the economy was greatly boosted by of all the new explorations. The flourishing economy helped to inspire new developments in art and literature. And from that many new beliefs were formed.
