Animals In Captivity The debate about whether zoos are being a good thing or a bad thing for the animals of the wild has been going on for several years. There are many theories and thoughts that people have on this topic. It is a very touchy topic for some people, whether they are for or against, and some people have other things that are more important to them making the topic irrelevant. After doing some research, I found that there are more pros than cons to having wild animals live in zoos. Most of the things people see as cons can be proven to not be true. Zoos do a lot more good than people in the general public think. Animals from all parts of the world should be kept in zoos for many reasons. They let the public walk around and see the animals in a setting that is very similar to their natural habitat. It helps people to better understand the lives process of animals and how they live their lives. In Rafiki’s Planet Watch at Disney’s Animal Kingdom, tourists can look into the lab where researchers work. They study hormones extracted from monkey droppings, according to the article “Not Just Fun And Games: Theme Parks Tout Their Researchers” found on the online database SIRS. Some zoos also do research and publish their findings. I have experienced this first hand on many occasions. During the summers while I was in junior high, I took classes at our local zoo. They were small classes that taught about the bone structure of the animals or their diet. They also have classes where you get to be hands on with the animals. You get to be a keeper for the day. Their work does not only takes place inside the zoo, it expands. When they rescue animals, the animals come from all over the world and from all different situations. They could be the healthiest animals at the zoo, or they could be close to death. In the article “Saving Whales and Its Image”, from the online database SIRS, at the Shamu Stadium, they play a video in the beginning of the show to bring everyone's focus onto the performers. The video is of a baby gray whale named JJ, found near death off of Marina del Rey, that swims out to sea after 14 months of rehabilitation at SeaWorld San Diego. The zoos have different sections separated for the sick and injured. They have constant care either in the tank or watching from a live video of the animals. It is not easy to rehab animals; they do not always listen or understand. It also takes time for the animals to trust the staff at the zoos to take care of them. With all of those struggles, the zoos manage to rehab the animals, and in a short time the animals that needed rehab will be released back into the wild completely healthy. Zoos are very helpful for both the public and for the animals. Some animal’s’ lives depend on the help from the zoo. While caring for the animals, they are also making the public aware of what they are doing and teaching the public about the animals. The world needs zoos; they are very beneficial with hardly anything against
