Animals kept in zoos has always been a controversial decision. Zoos have been around for 4,000 years. Many people argue about the impact a zoo has on an animal and the world. According to the article, ”Zoos: The Historical Debate”, “Some people argue that zoos play an important role in conservation of endangered animals, others say that zoos do more harm than good.” I believe that zoos play an important role in conservation. They also educate us about animals. Finally, zoos entertain us in many ways. In my opinion, zoos impact the world in a good way. Zoos play an important role in conservation. The most compelling evidence is that scientist gather information about wild animals. According to the article, ”Zoos: The Historical Debate”, “In 2002, zoos participated in 2,230 research and conservation projects in more than 80 countries. The information they gather helps them to develop new medicines and techniques to improve animal health.” Therefore, without zoos, scientist wouldn't be able to develop medicine for wild animals. It is also important to realize that zoos teach people about the needs of animals. According to the Saint Louis Zoo website, “People learn at zoos. They learn in our formal classes, lectures, camps, teacher workshops, distance learning, zoo tours, overnight and outreach programs. Informally they learn from keeper chats, docent volunteers, interpreters, signage and special exhibits. Most important, they learn from observing zoo animals. ……..On a scale of 1 to 10, our visitors rate their educational experience at the Saint Louis Zoo as a 9.1.” This is evidence that zoos educate us about the needs of …show more content…

Many people claim that zoos aren’t any better in the last 4,000 years. I believe otherwise. Animals are no longer kept in cold cages with steel bars. Animals have mini-habitats that look like their natural environment. It’s a friendlier environment than the wild. Sure they have more space in the wild but as I stated before, they live in constant fear because of us! Zoos are able to educate about the needs of animals. That's good because zoos open our eyes and in the past, they didn't teach us anything. The only thing they did was entertain by forcing animals to do tricks.
