The role of a sergeant officer does not end with catching criminals and investigating various cases. A sergeant officer is also responsible for supervising the performance of his subordinates and evaluating them and these include disciplinary actions. Like other professionals, police officers are expected to behave properly and ethically inside and outside the workplace. Hence, it is important for them to act according to their code of ethics and maintain a good reputation.

However, the act could have been prevented if the sergeant officer took action immediately. As the officers' superior, it is the sergeant officer's responsibility to make sure that his subordinates remain true to their code of ethics. Having witnessed such unethical behavior, he should have talked to the officers and explained that what they were doing was wrong and unlawful. The sergeant officer has the right to discipline his subordinates and not tolerate their bad actions. Unfortunately, he was not able to fulfill his task of keeping his subordinates disciplined and protecting other workers especially women. Police officers should know how to behave properly in the workplace and if there is one person who should teach them about ethics and set a good example is their superior.
Concisely, the sergeant officer did not ensure good order based on his response to the actions of the two police officers. Ensuring good order and discipline is one of the major tasks of sergeant officers and as the sergeant; he had the right to do what he had to do to teach them a lesson. Yes, this indeed was a legal stop. This was a legal stop because under the stop and frisk exception police can stop a person on the streets and pat them down for illegal objects, so long as they have suspicion. And, during my midnight shift patrol I found it to be suspicious that these two men were behind a closed business. A business in which has been burglarized in the past. I do believe that stop and pat down was justified. I believe the stop was justified because the suspect did not appear to fit the time or place, as it was midnight and the business was closed. As being a police officer becomes more and more scrutinized by the community and the media, it is difficult to find citizens to fill these positions. When a lot of what officers do day to day currently is continually watched, it makes it hard to please the community and also keep the safety of everyone, so it is ever more excruciating that officers stay safe. With our ever changing world police officers have to keep up as well to learn and adapt to how the world works to keep everyone and themselves safe. The Greeley Police department should provide more extensive training on educating officers to stay safer because it will keep officer safety a priority, create a better understanding as to why they should have body cams and dash cams, and learn to properly deal with mental health patients.
Jessie, I really enjoyed your post as I have been a police officer for 18 years and it directly relates to my job. Yes, police departments across the country must strive to make their departments more diverse, especially with the rising Hispanic population. One main hindrance to this goal is the fact that many cities are doing away with pension programs and starting hybrid or 401K retirement plans. At my agency, the Knoxville Police Department, we are having problems getting any race to apply because of the new hybrid system. I would recommend offering ride-a-long and cadet programs to attract more minorities to the field. As far as keeping arrest numbers equal to the makeup of the population, there is no way to make this happen
An officers’ job is not all guns and glory like it is perceived in movies and high crime television shows. What typically happens in a life of an officer is not as action packed as people tend to believe it to be. There are plenty of roles that come into being an officer. In my senior year of high school, I took criminal justice and during the semester, my teacher asked officers to come in and tell their jobs description and what a typical day is like for them. One officer came in with a bunch of tech gear worth thousand of dollars. She explained to us that she spent most of her time in front of a computer catching criminals online. Police officers are responsible for protecting people and property. Related job titles include Sheriffs and sheriffs deputy, detectives, and state police officers. However all of these job titles have similar duties for example they are all responsible for the protection of people and property. These job titles might be very similar but they do differ in many ways. Police officers patrol the city issuing citations keeping the peace and conduct traffic stops. Sheriff 's and deputies hold practically the same duties as police officers but do so for the entire county. A state police officer could also be addressed as a state trooper. These officers usually patrol highways and issue citations and are frequently called for comprehensive law enforcement services. Detective is the title that differs from the others the most. Detectives aren 't in uniform. They investigate crime scenes and find evidence for criminal cases. Detectives conduct interviews, observe activities of suspects, and also participate in raids. Although a normal police officer does not earn as much income as related titles it is still a very demanding and dangerous job.
No matter where law enforcement officers are they should maintain their professionalism. For instance, it does not make a good impression on the public if an officer is off duty and out with his buddies at a bar getting drunk and belligerent. If other patrons know he?s a police officer, it damages his reputation and public image as well as the department he works for. Police should also always be careful of what they say. You never know who could be listening. Perhaps a co-worker?s wife stopped in at the department store for something and another officer made crude comments that were over- heard by the wife. Not only is an incident like that downright rude and unprofessional, it could also be interpreted as harassment. Police officers must realize that they are expected by the community to maintain a level of integrity that others are not held to. This off-duty behavior could be misread as the officer being insincere about his job when on duty.
