When researching the career of a Suffolk County Police Officer, there are many different things to learn. There are tasks of a police officer, tests to get on the job, educational requirements, employment outlook and salary. There are also benefits and pension plans.
Police officers in Suffolk County do many different things. They do the general police work in the protection of all people, legal rights and property. Also, they get assigned different areas to patrol in a patrol car or on foot to prevent any crimes happening in that community. They enforce traffic laws, take calls for any crime that is happening, take to witnesses at crime scenes and arrest criminals. There are certain requirements to get this job, just like any other. The civil service exam to become a suffolk police officer is given every four years, that is why it is very competitive. This exam tests you on everyday issues in law enforcement, visualization, written expression, reading comprehension, deductive reasoning, inductive reasoning and much more. However, if a person does get called, the salary and benefits are great. The starting salary is $42,000 a year(which does include while in the academy). After 12 years of the salary increasing, it is around $111,506.00. The benefits include paid optical, dental and medical plans. Also, paid sick days and vacation days increase for every couple of years of service. Police officers are eligible for retirement after 20 years of service.
