Why I Chose Law Enforcement as My Major With all the jobs out there in the world, how does anyone decide what they want to do with their lives? Most of the time this is the first question young people ask themselves when they are trying to figure out what they want to major in at college. This question caused me a lot of confusion about my possible future career. The career I finally choose, like many other young adults, was law enforcement, to be a police officer. In the following paragraphs, I will describe the reasons for my choice, along with the effects that my education and training have on my goal of becoming a police officer.
There are three main reasons why I choose to become a police officer. The first is that I want

Many times, it comes down to extra training and education one can bring to the job. My Marine Corps training has taught me many different skills such as: leadership, first aid and combat skills that I can use in any situation. The main thing any police department would look at is my urban combat training. This training gives me the ability to make decisions fast and in the heat of the moment while the world around me is in complete chaos. Having been trained to keep a cool, level head about me as I encounter dangerous situations, will help me if I need to take down a perpetrator who decides he wants to fight it out or do something else to resist arrest. My choice of career has also been influenced by my self-study of police literature that I read in my downtime in my barracks room and the extra education classes I have taken from teachers and professionals in the police field at the educational center on Marine Corps Base Kaneohe Bay. I read books about police training, as well as books written by retired police officers about different situations that happened and could happen while they were on the job. The classes taken at the education center on base were about police/security jobs. The started from local correctional officer positions all the way to the FBI and the situations that came with them. From those classes, I can draw a baseline of what any police …show more content…
It gives me a leg up on other applicants for police jobs that only have a degree or military training. With both military training and a degree, the only competition for a job is someone with both military training and degree like me or someone who already is a police officer and is looking to move somewhere else. The job outlook for future police jobs looks good because as the population increases every year, the criminal element increases as well resulting in more police officers needed to deal with the increase in crime. This increase in police jobs also means there are more openings for advancement to higher level police jobs such as Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) or a police dog handler (K-9 Unit). Both of these police jobs appeal to me and would be the pinnacle of my career, only barely being beaten by becoming a SWAT Commander or a Police Chief. Getting either a SWAT or K-9 Officer job is going to be tough because these two higher level police jobs are the most sought after by police officers, especially those officers that are ex-military as in the case of SWAT. In order to get a SWAT or K-9 job, I plan on showing them I am the best person for the job. I am working on this even now by keeping up with my physical training by working out twice a day. I go to the gym for two hours in the morning and then in the evening, doing sprint drills
This book also offers a chapter on the pros and cons of becoming an officer. In general, it has information on how to become an officer. The book also sheds light on the inner world of police officers, how officers will protect their own--even if that individual is wrong. There is also a chapter on the traits an individual should have to better function as an officer. I will use this source to build on the "initial entry" of my outline. I will also be able to extract information for the "requirements" section of my
Becoming a police officer takes a lot of heart and determination. To become a police officer you must obtain a high school diploma or GED, pass the law enforcement entrance exam, graduate from the police academy and work towards promotion. In order to graduate from the police academy recruits must undergo 21 weeks of intense training. At the police academy recruits will learn all the following: state laws, criminal investigations, patrol procedures, firearms training, traffic control, defense driving, self-defense, first aid and computer skills (“An Overview of Police Academy Training”). The final step before graduating from the police academy recruits will take the Oath of Honor. “On my honor, I will never betray my badge, my integrity, my character, or the public trust. I will always have the courage to hold myself and others accountable for our actions. I will always uphold the constitution, my community and the agency I serve” (“What Is The Law Enforcement Oath of
My main focus for making this program is to become part of law enforcement and help protect the people that I will serve. I think I am fit for this program because I am athletic, intelligent, and outgoing. I always try to make the right decision and look out for my fellow peers. My father is apart of law enforcement and I look up to what he does which peaked my interest into law enforcement. As I watch a cop car go by I always imagined what it would be like to be that officer. Every year, my family and I go to the National Night Out when my town hosts it and our neighboring town, Manalapan. They have all types of law enforcement, DEA, K-9 unit, sheriffs, and police officers that participate and demonstrate what it would be like to be one of
My goal’s I attend to achieve in pursuing a certificate in Basic Law Enforcement are primarily to make an impact in the community. Furthermore, I enjoy the various jobs that Law Enforcement has to offer. Last reason, would be to be part of an exclusive organization that I can be proud of. My past experiences in my work history have been mostly related to customer service, problem solving, and interpersonal skills. I also have interacted with plentiful of people, on many different social levels and many diverse cultures.
Military Police have many jobs and have to meet many requirements to be able to do their jobs. They have to go through a lot of training in order to do everything required of them. They have to be able to react quickly and calmly in any situation and evaluate the situation with clear and responsive actions and everything in the training helps them do that. They receive a good salary and benefits and it goes hand-in-hand with the rank of the officer.
While becoming a police officer has many benefits there are also some cons that come to being one. Some of the benefits are you get to protect the people from criminals and bring them to justice for the wrong they have done. If a person works in homicide they get to solve murders and get to bring peace to the loved ones that this happened to and that would be a great feeling to have knowing that a person spent maybe hours, weeks, months, maybe even years to bring that person in and have peace knowing that person can now not do that again that’s a feeling that would be very satisfying to have. So more benefits of having this job is since it’s a government job you get extensive medical and dental coverage, top notch retirement plans, 2-5 week paid vacation, and holiday pay
The purpose of law enforcement is to protect the lives and property of both the community’s citizens and people who visit and work in the community. There are many different levels of law enforcement careers such as local, state and federal agencies. There are also many different occupations within the law enforcement field. One of those occupations is a police officer. (10 Things You Need to Consider Before Becoming a Police Officer, Criminology Careers.com, August 2012, Timothy Roufa, Criminology Careers Expert). To become a police officer it takes more than just wanting to carry a gun and “catch the bad guys”. The hiring process will be long. After submitting an application, each candidate must go through a written test, a physical agility test, an oral interview or two, a “background” check of nearly every aspect of his life, including driving records, drug or alcohol usage, a thorough medical and psychological exam, and a polygraph test. Then after that, each candidate must go through an exhausting physical and mental challenge known as the Police Academy. If the candidates make it through the Police Academy then they advance to on-the-job training known as Field Training, which is even more difficult than the Police Academy. After all of this training and becoming a police officer, one would have to ask themselves if the job is worth it. Police officers are put into dangerous situations daily. After all they have to deal with drunks, the mentally disabled
I realized that I am not one for watching people break the law and being ok with it, especially those who commit repeated offenses. I have thought long and hard about what I wanted to do with my life, I could work a corporate job, but I know when something happens or someone is driving recklessly around me on the way home, I'm going to wish that I was the one responding to the 911 call. I want to become a State Trooper because I wanted to protect and aid those who cannot. I want to become a State Trooper because I could not tolerate being on the sidelines and watching potentially dangerous situations drive right past me. I know from the feeling I get inside of me that I'm supposed to be a part of this elite group. I have to be out there, in the world, making a difference one road at a time. When dangerous situations arise and people start turning away, I have always wanted to run
My decision to become a Criminal Justice major was not a simple one. My high school cross country coach was also a Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Officer who told me that I had a very “police-like” attitude, which ignited a spark in my brain. Initially I thought it would be pretty cool to chase people down, shoot guns, and have my picture plastered on the front page of every newspaper for taking down the biggest drug cartel in the United States although my mind was still set on majoring in Athletic Training.
Being a police officer is by no means easy, there is a lot of things that goes on behind the scenes, things that don’t make the job so great. The job of a street cop is physically demanding, yes there is cops that aren’t in the best shape but to be a good cop you should be in decent shape. Their job is dangerous, there is all kinds of crimes and calls they get sent on every single day. There is many of
Originally I had planned to go to Waldorf University and major in criminal justice to become a police officer. I saw many two faced/unreasonable officers throughout my years of growing up that I wanted to do something different. I remember hearing about the cases on tv and thinking, hey, I can make a difference. I wanted to become a police officer to show people that not
I’m Isaac, and I guess something interesting about me to start is that I’m half Korean and half Chinese, and I also became a Canadian citizen just last year, on top of that I also lived in Canada for around 13 years. Throughout my time living in both Vancouver and Toronto, my hopes and dreams had changed for my future multiple times, but I determined myself to go into the police department for a long time now. Whether it’s being a part of the detective field or the Emergency task force. Why I’m determined to go into this field is, first the yearly salary is very reasonable with benefits as well as an amazing pension after I retire. The second reason would be I always wanted to live a somewhat luxury life style, with
Every student here at Dalton State is working toward a goal, which is to graduate and start a career in a specific job they have dreamed of doing. My goal is to graduate and start a career in law enforcement. Specifically, I hope to start a career in law enforcement with the Dalton city police department. As long as I can remember, I have always been amazed at what police officers do. I have always thought of police officers being a very special group of people who have taken an oath to serve and protect their community that they dearly love. To me, police officers are people who are willing to do a job that strides to make their community a better place for citizens, even though the job can become more dangerous than most people would expect
The curriculum that is devised for a police officer is very important to the police officer and his or her success in their chosen career path. An officer’s training is also very important to the community in which they serve and the department in which they work. An officer must receive training in a variety of fields to help them be a well-rounded police officer. Officers receive training in such areas as: law, community relations, firearms, vehicle driving, search and seizure, and cultural awareness. The basic curriculum that is offered to a new recruit is focused on giving the recruit the best overall training that will give him or her the tools necessary to become the
The United States Army has many jobs in which civilians can choose to enter that will allow them to specialize in a field of their choice. Many people have joined to serve their country, others have joined to make a living and some enjoy the sense of adventure. One of the many jobs available to a man or woman is a military policeman. As a military police, one is in charge of all the doings on the facility they are stationed at, as well as the little things that take place on base, such as traffic control, domestic issues, and other problems that occur. Before a civilian becomes a Military Police they must got through 3 stages of training, basic training, advanced individual training, and weapons training which takes place within . The life of a military police then forms into Basic and Advanced Training, active duty, and eventually, retirement.
