People should be lining up to get their vaccinations in order to prevent them from them getting sick and missing school, work or important events; but they aren’t, at Walgreens, we give maybe about 4 flu shots a day,

In 2018 there has been a new outbreak of the flu. This is due to the new strand of the flu, which caused the flu shot to not be as effective as it was in previous years. There has been controversy, as to weather you should get the flu shot or not. People who are against receiving the flu shot, have many reasons, such as they believe that it can cause other diseases, just straight up give them the flu, and few people believe that receive the shot can cause autism. The people who believe that they can receive diseases, the flu, and autism via receiving the vaccine, avoid getting it, and avoid giving their children the vaccine. I believe that these people have a false view of how the vaccination works, and that education on the flu shot is important,

To increase patient and hcw safety, health care workers should be mandate to get vaccination. Hcw are more at risk to get infection because of their contact with patient and then to spread it to patients, specially patients who are susceptible to the infection (CITATION). Influenza symptoms appears within 1-4 days. Before even hcw workes know that they have influenza infection and they are contagious, they may spread the infection to patient . Also, if hcw are infected, it will cause impact on their mental and physical functioning. Two randomly conducted studies have supported that mandatory influenza vaccination for hcw helped in decreasing death rate upto 44% in nursing home residents (Ottenberg, 2011). Potter et. al. identified that because of increased staff vaccination mortality rate reduced from 17% to 10% (Suillivan, 2010). The other fact which can effect patient safety due to low rate of vaccination is absenteeism of hcw during influenza epidemic.

Also, there is no violation of the right to make contracts between employer and employee by making influenza vaccinations mandatory for healthcare workers. The article “Vaccinating the Health-Care Workforce” states, “Courts have ruled that states may also limit and regulate contracts in the interest of the public’s welfare, and essentially to place protection of the public against individual economic interest” (Stewart). Healthcare facilities do not violate their worker’s rights by making influenza immunizations mandatory as long as it benefits the public health.

Should the Flu Shot Be Mandatory? Vaccines have been proclaimed by many people as one of the miracles of modern medicine. Vaccines are credited with saving thousands of lives and wiping out many contagious diseases. Recently, there has been a tremendous debate whether annual influenza vaccines should be mandatory.

For the past ten years, we at Virginia Mason Medical Center have been implementing mandatory influenza vaccination. This is due to the flu vaccination being able to reduce flu illnesses and prevent flu-related hospitalizations. According to the Center for Control and Disease (CDC, 2014) during 2012-2013, an estimated 45% of the U.S population got vaccinated, helping to prevent an estimated 6.6 million flu-related illness, with 3.2 million flu-related medical visits, almost 80,000 hospitalizations and roughly $87 billion dollars in total economic burden. Influenza is extremely contagious and each year on an average 5%-20% of the U.S population get the flu with tens of thousands die from a flu-related illness. Therefore, many health cares setting along with Virginia Mason Medical Center is mandating all their healthcare workers to get the influenza vaccination. Consequently, making annual influenza vaccination requirement for healthcare workers a continuing and debatable health topic. The influenza vaccination in not only beneficial to recipients but also those that come in contact with the individuals exposed to or at risk for contracting influenza. Health care workers are at a constant risk of exposure to various diseases and illness including influenza. An emergency such as a vaccination shortage for influenza will not only affect at risk individuals but spread rapidly to all those exposed without knowledge or a-symptomatic at time of encounter. In recent years, there has been a surge of parents who refuse to vaccinate themselves and their children. However, this can be incredibly dangerous and lethal if this new age trend continues to spread. When you receive the vaccination the strains have been “killed”, so there is no possible way for you to get this illness just by receiving the vaccination. Your body recognizes the unknown strains and builds up immunity so if a “live” virus gets in your system your body has the correct code to “kill” it off.

Healthcare workers are always at a greater risk of contracting contagious diseases as they work in hospitals and regularly encounter patients suffering from contagious diseases. Disease-causing organisms can easily transmit from patients to healthcare workers, the best precaution against this is, to have all healthcare workers vaccinated.

Keeping yourself healthy can be done in a number of ways, but the most important few would be: eating healthy, check-ups, exercising, and vaccines. A vaccination is considered to be the most beneficial and protected precaution you can take. Less than 50 percent of all Americans got vaccinated in the 2017 flu season. The reasons to actually get vaccinated could include the money you waste on missing work/ medical bills, to getting friends and family sick, but a main concern is not what the vaccine is preventing, but what it is doing harmful to your brain and body.
