Found information states that “nonverbal communication is the process of transporting messages through behaviors, physical characteristics and objects”. Its how and what we use in order to express our feelings and say things. Using symbols is a way of using nonverbal communication. Also nonverbal communication is the way we use body language and gestures too. Nonverbal communication is often used unconsciously. When using the certain communication it can be misinterpreted also. There are many different categories of nonverbal communication. They are the following: Aesthetics, Artifacts, Chronemics, Haptics, Kinesics, Paralanguage, Physical Appearance, Proxemics, and Oculesics.
Aesthetics is the study of nature, beauty and

It is a form of nonverbal communication”. Found information also states that, “the length of time that we spend engaged in an activity reflects our priorities and preferences”. The use of your time tells what your priorities are. For example, you are a college student and you club and party all the time and rarely go to class. That tells that school isn’t really your top priority partying is.
Haptics is the study of touch and the use of it. Research states that “women are more likely to touch more than men. Also, they associate touch with warmth and expression. Women are touched more gently than men are. Men are touched more harshly and they use their touch to direct, assert power, and to express sexual interest”.
Kinesics is the study of body movements, meaning gestures, facial expression, and posture. Now this is one of the nonverbal categories that are very much misinterpreted. Research states that “women’s facial and body motions generally signal approachability, and friendliness. They tend to use less and more restrained gestures. Women are attracted to those who smile more. They tend to use facial expression a lot to send and receive messages. Women often tilt their head and body to the side more also. And of course their posture is more intense than males’ are”.
Paralanguage is how we say what we say. Research states that “paralanguage includes grunt, groans,
Touch - Touch is the most used non-verbal communication. An example is when we shake hands at a first meeting. The way we handle individuals can be a positive way of communicating. We communicate when we lift an individual’s leg or move them.
On September 12, 2008, I observed two people; Person A and Person B. The observation took place at Applebee’s, a local restaurant, beginning at 7:21 p.m. and ending observation at 8:06 p.m. I was serving their table for the evening, enabling myself to observe them closely. The restaurant had died down from the dinner rush, leaving them one of three tables in the smoking section, normally filled with eight. Along with the outside light fading, the lighting indoors was dim, making the dining experience feel more quiet and intimate. The background noise was filled with a light roar of other group’s conversations, and a jazz station played quietly from the speakers overhead.
Nonverbal communication or body language makes up 55% of effective communication. This plays the biggest part in communication, and it shows the client or colleague more information than words alone ever could. Nonverbal communication includes facial expressions, body movement and gestures, head movements, eye contact, posture, and the use of distances and space. Understanding and using nonverbal communication can enhance the connection between you and others, navigate challenging situations and well as expressing interest in the conversation. this can also established effective rapport between you and the client or colleague.
Non-verbal communication consists mainly of the things people do with their body language. There are times where words are expressed and non-verbal communication could help emphasize the message. A few examples of nonverbal communication are hand gestures eye contact, facial expressions as well as tone and volume. I was given this assignment to observe a situation and take note of the nonverbal communication that occurred. I also had to observe whether the non-verbals were able to execute the message and if the behavior was acceptable.
Body language is “the conscious and unconscious movements and postures by which attitudes and feelings are communicated” (Merriam-Webster 's online dictionary, 2016). We may study the way body language affects people’s actions, such as knowing when a person is in love,
Furthermore how would we be able to transfer all of our knowledge to the next person, better yet, how would we improve our capacity of knowledge as a whole. We
Any communication interaction involves two major components in terms of how people are perceived: verbal, or what words are spoken and nonverbal, the cues such as facial expressions, posture, verbal intonations, and other body gestures. Many people believe it is their words that convey the primary messages but it is really their nonverbal cues. The hypothesis for this research paper was: facial expressions directly impact how a person is perceived. A brief literature search confirmed this hypothesis.
Undeniably, presentations give individuals an opportunity to connect with your clients, colleagues, and other contacts. Presentations are a rich two-way communication environment. However, it is essential that you build credibility before, during, and after your presentation. In addition, authenticity is of the utmost importance; even if you plan and rehearse, authenticity must be maintained. With presentations, nervousness and fear can be overcome by numerous strategies to ensure that your presentation is effective. Moreover, it is crucial that your nonverbal behavior displays confidence, strength, and concern. Enhancing these strategies can assist you in delivering a spectacular presentation (Cardon, 2013).
When we communicate with others, we persistently give and get silent signs. Most of our nonverbal practices—the signals we make, the way we sit, how quick or how uproarious we talk, how close we stand, how much eye to eye connection we make—send solid messages. These messages don't stop when you quit talking either. Notwithstanding when you're noiseless, despite everything you're conveying nonverbally.
In a romantic relationship, it is easy to have miscommunication between a man and a woman. “Most researchers agree that 70% or more of the meaning of any message is communicated through nonverbal channels like eye contact, facial expressions, posture, hand gestures, etc.” (Stinnett, 2015). Verbal and nonverbal messages are like a relationship, they work well together that way the message is sent and delivered appropriately and that there is no miscommunication. Women have their way of expressing themselves to their boyfriend, fiancé, and or husband and vice versa for men. This paper will focus on the varying behavior of gender in expressing the different type of emotions using nonverbal communication in a romantic relationship. Following
It is important to be aware of the differences between men and women in the art of nonverbal communication. Knowing these differences can be helpful in understanding why a person is doing a particular action and what it means. As was previously noted, women are more openly emotional and intimate so the body language they use and the reason they use it will be different from the man, who tends to be more reserved with emotional manners. Females are usually more expressive than men and are more likely to return a smile. They do not use as many gestures as men unless they are trying to gain approval from someone, but will usually opt for playing with their hair or clothing or placing their hands in their lap in social situations. Men, on the other hand, do not smile as much as women. They do use more gestures than females, such as sweeping arm and hand motions, in conversation. (West Virginia Department of Education) Males and females also use different body language in the realm of
One thing we all have in common is that we must all communicate in one form or another. Everyone communicates even if they know it or not. Both verbal and nonverbal communication is used during conversations. Using both forms helps convey and support the message you are trying to send.
“Systematic research on the role of nonverbal behavior in social interaction has been common only in the past 20 to 25 years.”(Edinger and Patterson, 1983, p. 30).because that statement was published in 1983, it is apparent that the study of nonverbal behavior has been around for roughly 50 to 55 years. However, that is still a relatively recent amount of time compared to research in other science fields such as chemistry or biology. Despite the fact that this field is relatively recent there are many theories about our interaction with others. This paper will discuss the nonverbal expectancy theory along with two other theories, and describe how these theories can work together.
Another non verbal method of communication is language of the body, which includes facial expression, haptic communication, gestures etc... These forms of communication rely heavily on the recipient understanding the social and cultural context of the message, because one type message in a Western culture can mean something totally different in Eastern culture.
A third type of communication is visual communication through visual aids such as signs, typography, drawing, graphic design, illustration, colour and other electronic resources.
