Positive body language and gestures are important too and being on their level allowing them the opportunity to see they have your full attention.

Facial Expression: The facial expression such as happiness, sadness, anger and fear helps a lot in conveying a message. These facial expressions are similar all over the world but non- verbal communication and behaviour varies hugely between the cultures in the world.Since the look on a person’s face is noticed , before we hear ,facial expression contributes a lot in a successfully non-verbal communication .

• Non-verbal – eye contact, smiling, turning towards them to show you are interested • Symbolic – stickers, smiling faces, merits, house points, stars etc.

On September 12, 2008, I observed two people; Person A and Person B. The observation took place at Applebee’s, a local restaurant, beginning at 7:21 p.m. and ending observation at 8:06 p.m. I was serving their table for the evening, enabling myself to observe them closely. The restaurant had died down from the dinner rush, leaving them one of three tables in the smoking section, normally filled with eight. Along with the outside light fading, the lighting indoors was dim, making the dining experience feel more quiet and intimate. The background noise was filled with a light roar of other group’s conversations, and a jazz station played quietly from the speakers overhead.

Facial expressions through non-verbal communication are a sufficient way in listening, expressing emotion and giving feedback. Non-verbal communication is a vital element of interpersonal communication as it helps express emotion and personality through the process of exchanging information (Eunson 2012). For women, body language is everything. Through her experiments, Tannen came to the conclusion that women, when having a conversation, would face each other directly and “their eyes would be anchored on each other’s faces” (Tannen 410). Although, when she would study the boys, she would find that the “boys would sit at angles to each other and look elsewhere in the room” when having a conversation (Tannen 410). Women often times find this form of action offensive, and would come to the conclusion that the man is uninterested in the conversation. Tannen gives the example of the young woman in college to illustrate how the boyfriend’s body language affected the young women. Tannen explains how in order for the young woman’s boyfriend to pay attention to the woman, “He would lie on the floor, close his eyes, and put his arm over his face” (Tannen 410). The woman didn’t know this, but that was how the man was able to pay attention when the young woman was talking. The miscommunication, between the man and the woman, caused a confusion and made the young woman to feel like he wasn’t paying attention, when in fact he was trying his best to listen to what she was

When talking to people you can find out how they are feeling by the way they are sitting, holding there selves and whether they make eye contact. A happy person will make eye contact but an unhappy person may look down and may appear tense.

Body language is “the conscious and unconscious movements and postures by which attitudes and feelings are communicated” (Merriam-Webster 's online dictionary, 2016). We may study the way body language affects people’s actions, such as knowing when a person is in love,

Nonverbal communication is behaviors and characteristics that convey meaning with out the use of words. Sometimes accompanying verbal messages, to clarify or reinforce them. (Floyd, Communicating Nonverbally, 2013) It is said to be true that nonverbal communication sometimes gives more information that verbal communication. People’s facial expressions, gestures, and personal appearance are all forms of nonverbal communication and it relies on our sense of vision. For instance, when my sorority and I get together for a meeting and the president of our chapter stands up in front of everyone to share information, it is important that we let her know that we are interested by nodding our head in agreement, smiling at her, clapping our hands, and keeping eye contact with her so she knows our focus is on her. For our chapter it is important to reassure our president that we are listening and focused on what she has to say by using nonverbal behaviors. It is important to be aware of the differences between men and women in the art of nonverbal communication. Knowing these differences can be helpful in understanding why a person is doing a particular action and what it means. As was previously noted, women are more openly emotional and intimate so the body language they use and the reason they use it will be different from the man, who tends to be more reserved with emotional manners. Females are usually more expressive than men and are more likely to return a smile. They do not use as many gestures as men unless they are trying to gain approval from someone, but will usually opt for playing with their hair or clothing or placing their hands in their lap in social situations. “Systematic research on the role of nonverbal behavior in social interaction has been common only in the past 20 to 25 years.”(Edinger and Patterson, 1983, p. 30).because that statement was published in 1983, it is apparent that the study of nonverbal behavior has been around for roughly 50 to 55 years. However, that is still a relatively recent amount of time compared to research in other science fields such as chemistry or biology. Despite the fact that this field is relatively recent there are many theories about our interaction with others. This paper will discuss the nonverbal expectancy theory along with two other theories, and describe how these theories can work together.
