The Epidemic of Convenience Modern technology has taken over our world. Instead of countless hours spent in libraries, society as a whole now only spends minutes researching a topic. Nicholas Carr, the author of “Is Google Making Us Stupid?”, believes modern methods of research such as Google and the internet are only harming our society. His views are right. Quick access to information has made us become less focused. Our world has grown accustomed to being lazy and still getting the results we want. All for the sake of convenience, our intelligence as a society has slowly started to slip away. Internet research applications, such as Google, have made it harder to focus when readers are faced with longer text. We no longer have to spend hours researching topics. Instead, one click and we have the world at our fingertips. While this can be useful, it can also become extremely dangerous. The ease of access provides us with a wealth of information, but it also teaches us the all information and research is easy. We no longer have to wait for information or work hard to obtain it. Society has be lulled into a sense of entitlement to fast information and little effort. Carr states his opinion on the effects of the Internet on work ethic by saying “As people’s minds become attuned to the crazy quilt of Internet media, traditional media have to adapt to the audience’s new expectations”(pg). He says traditional media outlets have now began to adapt to the shift in technology. People are no longer willing to sit and read a full article or book. We now look for a quick outlet of information. The Internet has trained society to be lazy in our efforts to seek more knowledge. Traditional institutions can no longer teach the way they used to.
