Communicating is how we get a better understanding of one another’s perception of things, as well as how we help someone to better understand ours. We need to express our feelings in relationships and know that they are reciprocated. Not communicating leads to problems and misunderstandings. People need to learn to understand what the other person is trying to communicate. Our human interpersonal communication skills are important to personal and professional growth. The course of interpersonal communication is outlined to make us aware of our existing skills, thus improves our understanding of the human communication both in personal and professional levels. My self-assessment will reflect on my strength and weaknesses, describe my communication style and behavior, and determine the importance of effective communication for my chosen career.

Interpersonal communication involves the relationship between two people and how they communicate with one another. There are many different types of relationships that people have with others. Each different type of relationship requires different types of communication. Not every relationship is the same and the way people communicate with one another is a very important aspect of how the relationship works. Interpersonal communication is impacted by emotions and at times these emotions can cause obstacles within relationships. Another important aspect of a relationship is one’s cultural beliefs.

Interpersonal Communication Competence is defined as constantly communicating in a way that is effective, appropriate, and ethical (McCornack, 2016). When a person is communicating competently, they are following social norms, are able to accomplish their goals, and treating persons in an unbiased manner. In my paper I will be discussing my own interpersonal communication competence and the evaluations that I, and my close companions, have made about my ability to communicate proficiently. I will begin my essay by explaining what effective and appropriate communication consists of, and follow up with my argument on how effective and appropriate I am in my interpersonal relationships. As I continue I will examine my empathy and why I am strong in this aspect of communication, followed by my deliberation of my conversation management and why I am weak in this category and how I could possibly improve. As I near the conclusion of my paper I will focus on my interpersonal communication motivation, knowledge, and skills. After reporting my scores in each category I will reflect on my skills, my lowest score, and explore why I am poorest at this quality and how I can grow in my capabilities. Overall I am a competent communicator, but enhancements can be made in my conversation management, effectiveness and skills in order to build up my competence.

The definition of interpersonal communication I like most is that of Stewart, “The kind of communication when people talk and listen in ways that maximize the presence of the personal.” This definition fits with interpersonal communication because it implies the different approaches to communicating, and what distinguishes them (the level of the personal that is present). For example, there are three approaches: I-It, I-You, and I-Thou. These approaches are important because they are used to distinguish the difference between interpersonal communication and dyads. While interpersonal communication requires an understanding of the personal, dyads are simply basic communication between two people that does not merit any such understanding.

Interpersonal skills are what we use every day to communicate and interact with people. Those who have strong interpersonal skills are usually the ones who are the more successful in their professional life and also their social life as they will be easy to understand and will draw people to them through their body language or by their way of speech. Employers look for people with good interpersonal skills because it will mean they will be able to work with others and be able to communicate with customers or clients.

Interpersonal communication entails swapping viewpoints with others by means of a variety of approaches, for example; expressions, actions, tone, face expression and body posture. Interpersonal abilities are the essence of businesses for the reason that effectual communication verbalizes effective productivity and simplifies cooperation. It inspires the effectiveness of important business tasks such as supervision, guidance, promotion and solving disagreements inside an corporation.

Effective interpersonal communication skills are essential for improving interactions not only with loved ones but also with colleagues in the workplace.

Learning how to communicate is often overlooked but its an essential skill for anyone. An example of how important this truly is would be a job interview. Everyone at some point will have to interview for a job to support themselves and their family. At most interviews, employers are looking for people who seem to communicate well with others and can present themselves by communicating their attributes. These communications skills that are necessary aren’t easy to come by. Although one may think it would be easy, many people wont be able to successfully land a job because of communication. One person may be the most qualified, but if you can not communicate well then it will not matter.

Having a strong interpersonal communication competence is a very valuable asset to have when interacting in one’s everyday life. Without a strong competence, one would expect to have trouble adapting to others, managing conversations, being involved in conversations, being empathetic towards others, being effective when conversing, and even being appropriate during interpersonal communication; therefore, as previously stated, it is a necessity to have strong interpersonal communication competence skills. I would say that my competence in interpersonal communication is very strong as I am able to be conversationally involved and appropriate.
