IMPORTANCE OF MANAGEMENT AND LEADERSHIP WITHIN PUBLIC HEALTH
INTRODUCTION
This essay explains the meaning of management and leadership, emphasizing on the various theories, models and styles of these concepts. Management and leadership skills are also outlined. These are then related to public health and analyzed to suggest what is most suitable and can be applied in the public health setting.

The concepts of leadership and management are often viewed in different ways with different theories and schools of thought regarding the meaning of these terms (Gold, Thorpe and Mumford, 2010). Whatever the outcome at the end of the day, it is the manager who is responsible. This means that rather than forces or facts, it is people that manage; and the perception, commitment and accountability of managers are the determining factors of success of failure when it comes to management. Therefore, it can be deduced that managers act or execute plans but it is management that determines if goals are going to be achieved or not by bringing people and tasks together (Drucker, 2012). Management is what holds an institution together and makes it work (Drucker, 2012).
Likewise, leadership is multi-faceted and can apply to many different situations (Stanfield, 2009). E sa (2012) described leadership as getting people to perform tasks in order to achieve certain aims. Stanfield argues that leadership is largely based on experience and does not necessarily depend on the number of followers and that to be able to lead effectively; one must also be able to follow. This is supported by Adeniyi (2010) who adds that there are many forms of leadership and leaders possess different traits and temperaments. Stanfield states that factors such as moral standards and integrity play a role in effective leadership. Leaders are often said to charismatic and possessing the skill that enables them to draw others to their visions or ideas. Although seen as a good quality, he points out that charisma can be either constructive or destructive, depending on how it is channeled
Before we look at what leadership styles there are it is important to define what the difference is between management and leadership.
Although the terms “management” and “leadership” are often confused as in meaning the same there is a distinction between the words. The distinction between the words is that people manage things and lead people (Collins, 2017).
Some theorists use the terms ‘leadership’ and ‘management’ reciprocally as if they are tantamount with one another, while others use them in a very purposeful sense to express that they are, in effect, rather different (Bush, 2003). Organisational successfulness, it is generally accepted, is dependant on both competent leadership and consistent management (Dimmock and Walker, 2005) According to Grace (1995) they do not follow from one or the other, but
The value and leadership skills in healthcare are both very professions are vital skills that are needed to provide everyday care (Graber, 2008). This literature review will explore the important values and leadership in health care. The review will provide the understandings of both topics. The term value can be determined by a person's standards and principles (Gaudine & Beaton, 2002). According to Grojean, Resick & Diskson (2004) leadership, is an actual way to improve patient`s. A good leader is said to reveal certain roles and behaviors that influence others in the way of positive change and direction. Viinamäki, (2009) back these same ideas but also have confidence in that there is a difference between value and leadership. They believe that leaders are viewed as individuals who can connect through motivation, visions, and inspire positive directions to generate company and organizational change. Graber (2008) impression of leadership can be understood as the capability of one person to impact the behaviors and actions of other people.

Management and leadership are often thought of as the same within business. The fact is that each of these has a different meaning:
Working in the health care environment the world needs effective, wise and visionary leaders, leadership matters in every organisation to change the health care environment so it may continue to grow to ensure it gives us better evidence based practice (Evans & M.L, 2015, p 34-50). All health care professionals are required at some point in their position to engage in management or leadership. As an AIN, EN or RN they all have a responsibility to educate, lead and manage within the health care profession (Innis & Berta, 2016, p.2-22). This allows each individual to develop useful and excellent leadership skills and management strategies to be able to educate and lead an exceptional team (Innis & Berta, 2016, p. 2-22). Leadership vs. Management, are they the same? No!. “A leader focus on setting goals and direction, challenging the norm, and seeking new ways of working towards the goals. On the other side, Managers specialize on conformance to the standards. They manage teams and individuals, organizing, directing and controlling to achieve goals” (EBA, 2016).
There has been debate about the difference between leadership and management. With some believing there is no distinction, while others that they should be separated in two defined roles.
Management and leadership are viewed as two different perspectives in the business environment. As described by Dr. Warren Bennis ‘Managers are people who do things right, while leaders are people who do the right thing’, this means that managers do things by the set rules and follow company policy, while leaders follow their own intuition, which may in turn be of more benefit to the company.
“Leadership is more ability than job. Moreover, it is all about determination, ability to solve problems, set direction for followers, gather them for common purpose and motivating people to achieve tasks. Furthermore, it is a charisma and the ability to reacting at the right time for a particular competitive situation” (L.Mullins, 2010, P372).
All the above mentioned descriptions emphasize on basic idea from where we can extract the result Leadership is the art of getting things done by inspiration, influence or motivating its followers while Management mainly depends on the analysis and ground realities.
The relation between leadership and management has for a longtime influenced how organizations are perceived. It has also contributed to maintain some type of confusion in education and within the organization itself.
However, the areas of leadership and management can also be considered to be very different.
