People are always getting into situations that have two possible ways to go. That person can choose the right thing to do or the worse. There have been numerous amounts of people asking the question “what is good and evil?” Many have tried conducting experiments to try and find the roots of what makes people good/evil? Evil acts and evil itself can be shown through the social, economic, and mental environment.

Now that’s all well and good, except for the fact that the logical problem of evil spends so much time focused on the omnipotent and the omnibenevolent aspects of God that is all together neglects the fact that God is also omniscient. He knows everything, past, present, and future. Therefore, it is only logical to assume that God also knows the best way to achieve the greatest good, which as established is the singular goal of an omnibenevolent being. If such knowledge is true, as it must be according to the laws of Omni-three, then it is possible that God has determined that the greatest good can only come by human-choice, also known as freewill, not by His force. That being said, God’s gift of free will to humanity is often used as the prime example as to why evil exist. Free will, theologian's would argue, is among the greatest goods, but for humans to truly have free will they must also have the choice to do evil. This argument is flawed however. The theologian would argue that free will and not being able to do evil is incompatible and therefore not possible, but God himself is a testament to the opposite. God being wholly good, would not freely choose to do evil, and assuming no theologian would argue that God has no free will, it must follow that it is possible to have free will and not do any evil.

In the book of Genesis in the Bible, God created the heavens and the Earth and all was good. God told Adam and Eve that they can eat from all the trees in the Garden of Eden except for one, The Tree of Knowledge and Good and Evil. God was and is compassionate enough to give the beings he created freedom of choice. Nobody wants someone who is forced into love. God also does not want us to be made to love Him but wants us to do so out of our own free will. That free will that God gives us is the source of evil. Just as Adam and Eve used the free will God gave them to be disobedient and sin, human beings evil because of their freedom to do so. In addition to free will God allows evil to exist because without it, the beings he created could not develop ethically. The Problem of Evil states that God cannot be all loving, all good, all powerful and everywhere because evil exists. Philosopher, John Hicks states that evil is necessary for soul and moral development. How would humans know that is good without it counterpart for comparison? In situations like the Charleston church shooting, where loved ones lives are violently taken by evil, the families of the victims are made to develop morally. When confronted with evil, violence, and grief, they either exhibit patience, love, courage, forgiveness, acceptance, and/or faith. Otherwise they conform or give into evil and become timid, weak, angry, or even become violent themselves. Without evil our world would be blissful.

Ivan believes that children are innocent and therefore they should not suffer aggression and torture from adults. When aggression, maltreatment, and torture are done to children, there is where Ivan might ask himself questions like, where is God?, why doesn’t he interfer? While God wants his creatures to do what is considered morally right, they cannot be infinitely free without the possibility of moral evil. Thus, God cannot show his omnipotence and prevent the evil in the world without destroying free will. Therefore, God must allow for the possibility of evil. His creatures are then capable of committing evil acts and releasing evil into the world. The free will to defy God and do what is considered wrong is the reason for most of the evil in the world.

First of all, it is possible that God has his reasons for allowing evil to exist that we just do not understand. Isaiah 55:8-9 says, “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declares the Lord. As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.” There is not much we can do in this case, we just have to have confidence in God and understand that his ways are above our ways. God may also just be letting evil run its course. He might want to prove that anything contrary to what he says will cause pain and suffering, eventually leading to death. Personally, I don’t think God created the world how it is now but rather evil was created because of man. God created man because he wanted people to love him just as he loves us. The problem of evil has existed for a long time and many philosophers including Michael Murray have gone to great lengths to explain the phenomenon. I believe evil pre-existed God's order and the nature of God is to create good out of evil. Evil is a necessary catalyst for good, and souls born in to weak bodies serve just as great of a life purpose, that molds the world towards kindness, as the souls born into strong bodies. Many times, the strong learn lessons of mercy and kindness from the weak; but all creatures big and strong are the catalysis for their own suffering.
