Friar Lawrence’s role in Romeo and Juliet Who is to blame for the deaths in the end of the play Romeo and Juliet? Friar Lawrence is a main character who definitely affects the storyline. Some people might believe that Romeo and Juliet are to blame, but I believe, ultimately, Friar Lawrence is to blame. Romeo could be to blame because he stupidly fell in love and made Friar Lawrence marry him and Juliet. Romeo’s careless actions brought devastation to the Capulet and Montague’s families. He had many near-death experiences, but people other than him died. Friar Lawrence married Romeo and Juliet secretly instead of encouraging them to talk to their parents. Maybe if they sat down and tried to rationally speak to them about loving each other, they could figure out how to settle down and not fight. Instead Friar Lawrence married them and caused chaos. “For, by your leaves, you shall not stay alone, till holy church incorporate two in one”(Shakespeare 778). Romeo and Juliet’s bond only grew stronger after marriage, which they couldn’t imagine a world without each other. This quote shows that Friar Lawrence said, during their vows, that they are now one. They shall never be apart, and Romeo and Juliet believed that because when Romeo was banished plenty of events caused chaos. Friar Lawrence is the cause of Tybalt and Mercutio’s death because if he didn’t marry Romeo and Juliet, Romeo wouldn’t have refused to fight because they were family and Mercutio wouldn’t have been killed. Juliet wanted to get out of an arranged marriage with Paris so badly, she wanted to kill herself. She was also distraught because Romeo was banned from Verona, and she can’t see him. Friar Lawrence helped her plan to fake her death, he gave her a potion to make her fall asleep for forty-two hours. “Take thou this vial, being then in bed, When presently through all thy vein shall run a cold and drowsy humor; for no pulse shall keep his native progress, but surcease; no warmth, no breath, shall testify thou livest…”(Shakespeare 818). This quote helps show that Friar was helping Juliet. He gives her a vial of potion that she will take to hibernate. Because of this, Romeo believes Juliet is truly dead and he kills himself, wanting to be with her. During this time of chaos, Friar Lawrence was supposed to go down to the cellar and get Juliet so she didn’t suffocate, but he didn’t help Juliet. He let her kill herself, which is exactly what happened. “Yea, noise? Then I’ll be brief. O happy dagger! This is thy sheath; there rust, and let me die”(Shakespeare 842). This quote shows that Friar Lawrence was there and he just wanted them out of there because he heard a noise; he only cares about himself and his safety.
