Learning from people from past generations is an awesome experience. Not only does one get more knowledge from the experiences, but one can learn about oneself even further. I person I was interested in interviewing was my father. My father who left his hometown at the age of 20, for a better future, remembers his upbringing in the small town that is a speechless witness of my dad’s early life. My dad was born in a rural town in Mexico, which is about an hour and half away from where tequila is produced. He was the third oldest child out of five children. I live in a country where I can meet people from all cultures and walks of life on a daily basis, yet still I have felt like a stranger in this “melting pot”. In the United States, the idea of diversity is a term I have heard many times when speaking of ways to heal the past of slavery and segregation, but I think that in the current political climate, diversity is seen as an enemy to the American way of life. I am an outsider in the country I call home, and my cultural background has impacted the way I see the world.

On the playground, I met who will soon to be my first best friend, shortly after I had my first kiss. Kissing a girl, I felt so scared of what it meant that I knew I had to make myself the way I believed was right. I thought the best way was denying and eliminating all feelings that I had of the opposite sex because I never saw two of the same sex could be together. Little did I know my mom is gay but, she was too afraid to talk about it at the time so, it led me to struggle with my sexuality growing up. I developed strong feelings for my best friend and I believed that I just loved her because she was my best friend. My original topic I chose was intended to be the study of the shopping differences between men and women, with other factors being taken into consideration. I had picked this topic because I know in today’s society, women are pictured as over-emotional and over-spending who can’t control themselves. I wanted to somehow prove this wrong. During my four hours researching, I found that no one was buying anything. I decided to switch my question into something that was more applicable: Are people still buying things at the mall? I would watch as groups of people walk past carrying nothing. If no one was buying, why are malls still being built?

For my ethnographic project, I chose to experience the life at Islamic Center of Tucson, which is placed near the university of Arizona. For the purpose of this project, I will point to the Islamic center of Tucson as “The Mosque.” Ethnography is exploring culture phenomena which are the anthropologists understand societies from a research of a study. According to Eller, “participant observation by definition puts researchers skin to skin, life to life, with “subjects” who are living people. That fact demands a particularly self-conscious code of ethical behavior” (Eller 2013:37). The main focus of the paper is to observe the setting of the place from the outside, inside, human social interaction and language use.

I ordered three items from the cheesecake factory that made my taste buds so excited! The first thing I ordered was a kale salad. What enticed me to order this dish was the adjective “fresh” and the ingredients in the salad. This salad contained apples, almonds, green beans, and kale that tasted fresh, hearty, and earthy. The raisins were a complement to the dish, as they made it sweet. The aroma of the dish was clean, clear, cool, and refreshing. This portion size was small because it was a side salad. The presentation was pretty and neat; nothing stood out from the rest. I think it was worth the money. The second thing I ordered were the Baja chicken tacos. I got my first camera at the age of eight; it was a blue Olympic digital camera. I used my camera whenever I could. Ever since I was little I noticed the little things in life. In the film “The Human Family Tree,” the Genographic Project traces the human journey throughout the world, from our origins from Africa. The Genographic Project is a genetic anthropology study. The project’s goal is to map historical human migration patterns by collecting and analyzing DNA samples from people from around the world. In this specific film, with the help of science we can see how people from New York each have their own unique genetic history. To begin with, deep ancestry can be traced, based off of either your mitochondria or y-chromosome. Because women do not have a y-chromosome, it only shows the maternal line of descent when studying their mitochondrial DNA, while for men it shows both maternal and paternal. In the film we

Participants for this study will be adolescents and young adults ages 13-19. Participants will be chosen using the multistage sampling method. Participants ranging in age 13-17 will be selected on a volunteer basis from local middle and high schools whose parents/caregivers have given consent to participate. Participants ages 18-19 will be randomly selected from volunteers at local colleges and universities. Ideal population would be diverse with participants from all ethnicities and social economic groups. I am from a Filipino family, but was raised in Guam, a very culturally and ethnically diverse island in the Western Pacific Ocean. Guam’s culture embraces the pluralist view of Michael Walzer 2004 that it is a place of diverse “ethnic, racial, and religious groups” (p. 635). Historically and culturally Guam has been exposed to many peoples from diverse backgrounds. But white people are usually referred to as “haole,” a Hawaiian term for a caucasian or non-native. There is definitely a culture that portrays “haole’s” as disrespectful, entitled, and ignorant. Despite this, many visitors of the island commend its hospitable and welcoming culture.
