Since 1982, all kinds of books have been banned for the content they hold. Topics like race, sexually explicit content, homosexualaity, religion and more. Books are banned by librarians and teachers because they do not want children or teenagers to read about these topics. Children and teenagers are told they are not supposed to read these books with harsh topics because they are afraid it could influence them. They are afraid that books that talk about suicide, like 13 Reasons Why, will influence teenagers into committing suicide. Books being banned does not mean teenagers or children will not be able to get ahold of them some way. Just because certain books have topics teacher, librarians, and parents do not like, does not mean they should be banned from teenagers and children to read and learn about. They get banned because of the naked truth of their subjects. Stories that touch on the harsh reality of racism are deemed inappropriate for school. “The classics have one thing in common: they say something humanity needs to hear, and they say it masterfully,” Was stated in one of the articles. The classics, along with other stories about the history of the world, tell us things we do not want to hear. Because of books using harsh topics like what is going on with the world, they get banned from libraries and schools. Banning books about the world’s past and present will not, and does not change a single thing, other than the children or teenager being under educated over the subjects. Banning books that include subjects about the US history, and rough patches that America and other countries have hit does not change the fact that they happened. Not allowing teenagers, and children to read these books is only harming them in the long
