As United States citizens, we have the right of freedom of expression; the First Amendment of the United States constitution states, "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or the press…" (First Amendment Oct. 20, 2013). The act of book banning could prove beneficial to the society because it could keep the students and youth of our culture away from books with a bad influence or things that would not help them in any way, shape, or form. “If a book is deemed offensive, some may argued, that it is promoting ideas which can have a detrimental influence on individuals (often children) and on society as a whole” (Aliprandini, Sprague 2016). The idea to ban certain books from schools and libraries is preposterous due to the manner in which the people trying to enforce these bans try to do so in. Banning books doesn’t help with the already present problem that our youth’s intelligence levels are already declining, and neither does allowing the freedom to all books. According to the American Library Association, the most common group of people, challenging a book being read in schools, was the parents of the students. Parents have a right to be in charge of what is put into the minds of their students, however just because one parent objects does not mean that the whole school should ban the book from the list. A solution for this book would be to enforce parental consent for books to be read in the classroom. If a parent does not want a book to be read in the classroom, then there should be other options for the student to read. The school and teacher should not trespass on a parent’s rights of raising their child. I believe that if a parent has a concern, they should go and discuss the problem with the teacher so that the teacher will be able to defend their reasoning for choosing the book to be read in the classroom.

Books are a gateway to a world of imagination, but some schools are trying to shut those gates off by banning them. In conclusion, I think that schools should not ban books because the books have history and if you erase the books you are erasing history. I wish that people would understand that these books mean something different that it isn’t really meaning the words in there which are bad now but before they always meant something

Banning books seems like a great idea, but in reality people are going to read, and do, whatever they want to. A lot of books have explicit language, violence, and sexual content. Most kids know about all of those things, even though they shouldn’t know about those things. Banning them from reading a book that includes those explicit things, at school, doesn’t mean they won’t go and read it at home, or at a friends house. Schools, and public libraries, have been trying to ban certain books with, what they see as, inappropriate content for many years now. Everyone has a different opinion on what is appropriate and what is not. Kids going to public schools are going to hear, and learn, explicit language, see violence, and probably even see people doing sexual things, or at least hear about it. Authors are going to write about whatever they want, it is their right to express how they are feeling, or what they are thinking. The Bible was also on the banned book list, and most people would argue that anyone who is reading The Bible is a Christian. It shouldn’t matter what content is in The Bible, if that’s not your religion you have no sense reading that book. Banning books is not going to keep kids from learning things, that in reality, they shouldn’t be learning. Banning books, in the end, is really hurting the author more than anyone.
