Your future has arrived, are you ready? Twenty years ago if you had told somebody that driverless vehicles would be driving us around our cities and on our highways, they would have smiled and said only in the movies. Now it is not so farfetched. Driverless cars are fast becoming reality. Just as computers did, driverless cars will change the way we live. And like any other innovation, it would free up time for more creative thinking. In recent years, we have seen small improvements to our cars, making them more automated. Bluetooth and GPS play a big role while driving our cars. GPS will navigate for us without using a map, and Bluetooth allows us to go hands free to concentrate on driving. People that are blind could then have the ability to drive wherever they so choose. In addition, people who use a wheelchair every day could simply roll up to the car and go. Driverless cars would drastically cut traffic tickets in half. You would also have more time for other things while your car is driving you such as working on homework, talking on the phone, drinking coffee, and the list goes on and on. There is a long list of positive things about driverless cars, but there is another side to that coin. What happens when there is a failure from the computer or other components of the car? Would this cause serious accidents and injuries or even the worst-case scenario death? According to the article Are We Ready for Driverless Cars,” Currently, the car’s sensors are unable to cope with poor weather conditions like heavy rain and snow-covered streets”. (Ibrahim Balkhy, 2013) Another unanswered question that has come up is who would be at fault if an accident were to occur and how would it be paid for. This would undoubtedly point the finger at the cars manufactures since there is no longer human error in the equation. Lawyers would have a heyday. I think driverless cars would be safe about 95% of the time just like flying an airplane or a jetliner but if an accident were to occur, it would most likely be devastating.
