Designer Babies

The production of a designer baby is, in my opinion, exploitation of the existence of the human individual. A designer baby is treated as an object and not a natural individual. This is not compatible with the human dignity that every individual is entitled to. The designer baby will not be accorded dignity since it will not be thinking for his good but to achieve a different goal. The designer baby is treated as a means only and not as an end. This is an abuse of the human dignity.

The term designer babies come from the procedure of embryos being selected and using genetic screening to make sure inherited diseases from their parents aren’t passed down to their offspring. But today this power is becoming abused. Some people are selecting the embryos and want to use this to pick what their child will look like and taking out certain genes to ensure their dream child. They are able to create certain traits such as athleticism or intelligence also in the embryo. Genetic screening should only be used on an embryo so ensure that is will have a healthy future and a long life. It should not be used to pick out your perfect child.

A designer baby is genetically engineered baby. In other words designer baby is an edited human examples are parents’ choice of eye color, skin color the child being smart or active. The first designer baby was created in the year 2000. A designer baby can also not contract diseases you can genetically make the baby be immune to a family disease or any certain diseases. As we stand in the world today, we as humans have never been more technologically advanced or scientifically intelligent. We have the ability to explore outer space and the depths of the oceans. We are even in the process of developing organs using 3D printing technology. While it is positive advancement to be able to select against life-threatening diseases, the creation of an a-la-carte baby is unethical and crosses the line between positive sociological developments and immoral manipulations of nature for many reasons.

Living in such a fast paced society people look at new technologies as almost being something that they are forced to try. Biological and technological advances become so over bearing that we almost can’t resist. Although Stephan L. Baird in his article Designer Babies: Eugenics Repackaged or Consumer Options? Day by day, an accretion of advancements and improvements are formed across the world. Prominent developments occur rapidly, like the use and creation of technology. Technology has and continues to create an immense effect on how we live our daily lives. Its use is ranged from how information is found, travel, communication, and more.
