Success can be interpreted in various ways through many diverse perspectives. Each individual has his or her own definition of success and perceives it differently and all explanations vary from person to person. Most people may say that success is achieving materialistic goals by following certain procedures. “Success is achieving something where it is a goal or getting to a certain point in life or a task” (Sarah Felten). To me, success is not just about attaining materialistic goals, like becoming rich. Success depends on how the goals are achieved. Success should be acquired the right way. I competed in the “Middle Level Spreadsheet Applications” event. Using what I learned in Digital Design class that year, I practiced and prepared for the test and producing the spreadsheets. When it was time to take the test, I completed two out of the three parts of the test due to time constraints that I learned about during the test. I got third place in Polk County in my event. My Digital Design teacher and FBLA coordinator at my middle school, Mr. Patterson informed me that I was only a few points away from getting first place and if I had completed the last part of the test I would have gotten it. I took the test again to see if I would place at the state conference, but unfortunately I did not place. The following year, in eighth grade, I competed in spreadsheets again and using my prior knowledge of the time constraints I would encounter, I finished all the parts of the test. That year, I got first place in the Polk County, which qualified me to take a different version of the spreadsheet test. That test would determine if I would place at the state conference. Using my time wisely again, I ended up placing first place in the state of Florida in “Middle Level Spreadsheet Applications”. My teacher later told me that my spreadsheets were made perfectly and my scores were larger than and not even close to the scores of the other competitors. Through my experiences, I learned that to be successful some vital qualities you need are to be determined, hard working, and use your time wisely. After placing third in the district and not placing at state, I learned from my mistake of taking my time and not being able to finish the last part and earn those few points.
