Definition Of Success

Success, as described by Winston Churchill, is “…going from failure to failure without losing enthusiasm.” This has taken on greater meaning in our modern day, as the path to success has seemingly become more complex. Is the American dream still valid? I would say yes, considering that we are currently in a recession. Undoubtedly success can only be defined by the individual. In the video, “What’s Your Definition of Success?”, a man explains that success are the smiles he receives from his wife and child. To me this is the best response because it explains that happiness should be the ultimate goal, and you will be successful no matter the outcome as long as you are happy with how you achieved your goals.

In “Chaos, Disorder, and The Late Show” Warren Miller Writes, “I Have a good job” I said “I am doing the work I like.” Warren Miller is at a place in his life where he has achieved personal success. I will share what my definition of success to me means and what plans I have to achieve them.

The matter of considerable controversy at present is the definition of success by different category of people. With a significant amount of people claiming that the real success is the professional and economical success. In this context, my view is contradictory to the aforementioned statement.

Success is one of those words that does not have a uniform definition that can apply to every circumstance. Success can mean plenty of things; to someone who started out with nothing and gained little, they would see themselves as successful. On the other hand, someone who started off with plenty can have a different idea of success from the person who started with nothing. I am one of those people who started off with nothing; my parents and I immigrated to the United States from Nigeria and to my family back in Nigeria, I am very successful. Yet I see myself doing much more; my definition of success may change over time, but there is one thing that I expect to have in all my ideas of success: Being so successful that your success rubs off on other people who need it.

The dictionary may have a set definition for the word “success”, but every individual has his or her own interpretation of what may make something or someone successful. Money, status, and power all initially come to mind, but success is not entirely about an end result of monetary rewards. At High Point University, students are taught to value the motivation and determination behind being successful, and how being successful must also be satisfying. There must be a passion and drive behind all that a person chooses to be and accomplish. Furthermore, the end result must be a life of significance. The opportunities I have been presented with as a first-year student are meant to guide me to achieve just that, and I intend on taking full-advantage of all this campus has to offer.

As an eighteen year old, the term of success has been used in many different contexts. Although, we tend to define success as a person who has made millions or someone who has broken down barriers for the next generation, however, have we been leaving out the most important part of success? Does being successful guarantee your happiness? Does it replace those lonely nights? Does success replace those sleepless nights? Does it replace the friends you have lost along your path? In my opinion, it does not. Success cannot be determined merely based off of comparisons with another person. In fact, I am a firm believer in do what makes you happy because everyone else is temporary in our lives. My definition of success is based on self happiness because if you cannot be happy with yourself how can you bless others?

Success is like balance, tedious and differing, always needing adjustment to match a each differing situation. Balance is such a simple thing, yet people are so amazed by the feats it can achieve. Balance is a strange and untouchable thing, always wavering in the distance, never able to be reached. Balance is a mythical and miraculous thing that people are always trying to achieve, yet is so hard to get to. Just as is success. Success is simple and amazing, strange and incorrigible, mythical and miraculous. People always strive to reach success in their lives, to finally meet that end goal they were striving after so long. Both balance and success are goals people strive to achieve yet are so hard to get to. And each is just as subjective as the other.

Wealth, fame, and respect are synonyms used for success, however; such meanings feel incomplete. I on the other hand, believe that success is having the energy to remain focused on small goals and having them amount to something greater. Both of my parents immigrated to America with a third grade education, yet their diligence towards setting daily goals of different caliber has turned them into successful people. Seeing their struggle and perseverance first hand has influenced me to set goals for myself and carve a path of my own.

A large portion of one’s life is spent working to be successful. Different people have different interpretations of what success means to them. For some, success is measured by wealth and your social status; for others success is determined by how happy you are. I believe success is all about reaching goals and being happy. A successful life can only be obtained by pursing your passion, maintaining healthy relationships, and putting self-approval over the approval of others.

Success is in the eye of the beholder. The definition of success has many meanings. It could mean how high a person reaches in their career, how well they do in school, how fit they are, how smart they are, how beautiful or handsome they are and even how much money they make.

The definition of success may vary depending on who you ask. many believe that the only way to succeed is to have a lot of money; however, there others that believe just having a roof over your head when going to sleep would be considered successful. I am one of those believers. I believe if you have a bed to go sleep at night, food on the dinner table, a healthy family you are considered successful. Every American would love to live the “American dream” which considers a well-paying job, a beautiful house and an amazing family. Happiness is a big factor where I got my definition from. People strive to achieve their goals and when they do reach their goals they become a happy person. No matter what their goal maybe as long as they complete

Most people commonly describe success, as being wealthy in life. This is not the meaning entirely, the definition of success is simple. A person is successful, if he or she has very good payment at his or her work and if he or she is happy with the job, they are doing. Education really leads to success. If a person has good education, he or she can choose their careers and be successful at it. Education is a form of learning in which the knowledge and skills is being transferred from a group of people to another or from a generation to the next, through teaching and training.
