The term “dark ages” comes from Petrarch, who was an Italian scholar that lived after the dark ages, and compared it to the classical era. Medieval Europe happened from 500 AD to 1500 AD, also known as the medieval period in Europe. It is called “the dark age” because of the disease, famine, murder, chaos, and death that happened during that time.

The Medieval Europe was considered a “dark age” because of the The Crusades and the amount of death that trailed behind them. Although, the Pope held a lot of power in Europe at this time, he sent people to fight, so they can come to Constantinople. Some people decided to go on this journey for their sins to be forgiven, as well as go to heaven. Since the Pope gave them a free pass into heaven, many others didn't just do it to get into the afterlife, they did it so they can have freedom. The disease was first introduced in Asia, but then quickly spread to Europe due to Europeans traveling because of trade routes. The disease which is carried by fleas and rats were a big threat. They were a big effect of the plague, and the deathly illness soon became airborne and the death rate skyrocketed to almost 100 percent.
