Cultural Self-Analysis
1. What factors do you believe define culture?
I believe there are many factors that define culture, such as language, food, traditions from past generations, religion, and values. All of these factors have the power to influence the individuals within.
2. How would you define the elements of your culture?
My culture is defined by a mixture of different elements and influences. For instance, many of the traditions were brought to Cuba from Europe, Africa, and even Asia. In terms of food, something that Cubans cannot live without is white rice, which is said to come from Chinese culture. We actually have a Chinatown in the capital city. Many of the traditional Cuban dishes include beans and many types of soups that are from Spain and some parts of Africa. Our language is Spanish, and even though it is the same as in Spain, the way we speak is very different from the way people speak in Spain. Music is an essential element in our culture. Walking on the streets of La Habana, the capital city, you can hear either Afro-Cuban jazz, Spanish fusion, such as Flamenco, or Son, which is a style of music considered to be the father of Salsa music. I find here kind of the tradition of putting yourself together fast after a problem, so you can start all over again. This is in general, either with a business or any project that a person has, and people encourage others to learn from the experience and start again with the same energy. When I discovered that way of seeing life, I quickly added it to my life and it makes me feel stronger and confident that if things go wrong, there will always be an opportunity to get it
