College Stereotypes

College is a place where students learn what they want to be when they graduate and they use that knowledge they obtained from college to fulfill their dream by what they have studied, so hard for in college. Some people ask, “Is College worth it?” and the answer to that question is, “Yes.” A lot of people continue to disagree with that answer, but when it’s all said and done: college is worth it. That is why, there is still students that enroll into a 4-year college or a community college because they want to become successful in life which is the reason why they feel that college is worth it.

“In fall 2016, some 20.5 million students are expected to attend American colleges and universities, constituting an increase of about 5.2 million since fall 2000” (National Center for Education Statistics). That number seems to be rising each and ever year, and it almost seems as students feel like they have to go to college directly after high school. Maybe it is because they feel that they have to fit in, even if college is not for them. Although some students attend college for academics, sports, and other reasons, some students attend college for no apparent reason; with that in mind, students should take into consideration the time and money that is put into going to college.

College is a chance to be free and is a bridge between the real world and school. I’m an adult and expected to behave as such; I make my own choices where I have to decide what is important to me. In 2007, Pharinet posted a blog post that covered a different opinion of college education. In “Is College For Everyone?”, another view is presented. This view of college education goes against the general belief of society. Pharinet is arguing that although everyone has a right to college. It is not the place for everyone.

Often college students will question the college experience and if it is even worth it. Why spend all that money and time for just a piece of paper. Not only that, but when someone gets into the desired workforce, is an individual ready for that career? The whole debate about if college is worth it, all started back in 1636 when New College (Harvard) was just beginning. The debate continues to press on. Usually each opinion on the subject is based on how the opinionated person is doing in the present after being done in college. If aren't making tons of money like they planned to do or working as their dream job, they might have a negative outcome on college rather than someone that is doing good after college graduation.

While you grow up through school, you hear over and over that college is a must if you want to land a good job as an adult. That seems reasonable, I have to get a higher education to get a job with more money and potential. Then comes junior year and you go to look at schools and you see the price of tuition. Everything changes, college isn’t just a dream anymore it's a burden.

As a young girl, the idea of college was a distant dream that I knew was important. I was told every day for the past 12 years of my life that college is the threshold to a better life because with a college degree you can accomplish so much more. Now, as a high school graduate, College and everything that comes with it is my reality. From applying to accepting an offer to orientation and financial obligations is all too real. I am just starting to realize how difficult college is.

In our society today, college is something that one is expected to attend. Today, our place or position in society is mostly looked at by our education level rather than who the person truly is. Now society is also looking at this generation for us to know that to succeed, one might set high goals for their self, which means going to college and pursing a degree. On the other hand, there are some people in this world that graduated from high school and have never been to college and are just happy with their life like it is. There are two ways to look at this topic. One view is that college is worth the cost in the long run and another view is that college is not worth the cost at all. College is worth the cost. Yes, it can be expensive depending on where the high school graduate would like to attend, but education is something that is worth the cost and something one will never lose.

Going to college allows for many opportunities to open up in life. Society is changing at a very rapid rate. College is a very difficult time for nearly everyone, as Charles Murray who published an article on should the Obama Generation Drop out also states that “A large majority of young people do not have the intellectual ability to do genuine college-level work” (95). Attending college is not for everyone, but It can teach you to learn how to become independent, develop discipline, evolve new life skills, and learn how to balance a social life versus student life. The experiences you obtain and gain from attending college can lead you to learn how to live your life within the college environment in a way that creates harmony with who you are. It is a time of trial and error until you find what works for you. Eventually harmony is found by choosing a major that coincides in a positive way with the person you are. Once this is found, you will be able to establish a system of studying and learning that works for how your mind works. It is natural that your life will be in disharmony when the circumstances in your life change dramatically, such as when you go to college, but your life should eventually return to being less stressful. The knowledge students gain from college is like no other, other institutions can not even compare to it. You always hear freshman say that college is nothing like high school, you can not slack off even a bit. Stereotype produces numerous situations when most are negative in nature. Many studies have been extended since first reported by Steele and Aaronson in earlier years. The term stereotype threat is a threat that diminishes performances, beginning from a negative stereotype about one’s own social group (Steele, 1997; Steele & Aaronson 1995). Stating that stereotypes can harm performances on tasks that are stereotyped. When being associated with a negative stereotype or being judged by it, pressure is built to confirm that the stereotype is incorrect. In many circles of the world, various groups of people distinguish themselves from one another through religion, language, culture, and sometimes gender. People also develop stereotypes about a particular group of people in order to identify them. However, most of the time, these stereotypes hold true for only some members of a group. Sometimes, these stereotypes are just plain misconceptions that do not even apply to the group it claims to. Stereotypes are placed on people because it is a way to easily identify what type of person or ethnicity an individual is. To begin, one good thing about college is it makes you want your goals more. By this I mean, the hard work that you put into college becomes drive to make you complete your goal. In other words, college is like a videogame and your goal is the princess. The harder you work on the levels to get to the princess the more you want her. So in other words. One example of this is my mother, when I was younger my mom decided to go back to college.
