Censorship In Cuba

The Cuban government avoids taking action on big issues due to bribes from people who don't want to see any change in Cuba. The people who are bribing these officials are most likely conducting illegal activities . Refworld.org has Cuba ranked from a scale from 0-10 (0 being the worst) 4.5 amoung 186 other countries.

There are only five countries left in this world that still call themselves communists stated by (PRI,2013). Everyone knows those five countries as, China, Dominican Republic, Korea, Vietnam, and of course Cuba. Cuba is home to 11.2 million citizens whom live a very different life than us who populate the united states (PRI,2013). During the year of 1925 the socialist party was founded forming the Communist party. Cubans government has survived over 50 years of Communism (BBC,2017).

Overall, Cuba has a unique government that for the most part, keeps all the citizens happy. Sports and education are two of the many things that are important to Cubans. Children in Cuba, ages six to fourteen, are required to go to school. Education, including universities, are free to Cubans.

The U.S. and Cuban controversies have been around since 1962. The president has decided that isolating Cuba has not worked and recently loosened travel restrictions and exports restrictions. Although this is a huge step to right directions economically, cultural effects so far have been minimal for both the U.S. and Cuba. Politically, Cuba is a socialist country, however, has been taking steps to democracy. For example, reforms breaking up government owned lands and authorizing self employment in many occupations. Freedom of speech is limited for Cubans in a variety of ways which includes books, internet, newspapers, music, and movies. All of these examples are numerous censored ways that Castro had the society enclosed. Committing acts “aimed at subverting the internal order of the nation and destroying its political, economic, and social system” will imprison an individual up to twenty years (Durane). Cuba has the most restrictive laws against freedom of speech and press. The government conveys what all you hear on the radio, what materials an individual may purchase at the store and so forth.

Censorship, which is often described as the destruction of free speech, generally encompasses the altering or deleting information in a message or communication between the sender and receiver, often without their notice or consent. On the other hand, free speech, is defined as “the right to express any opinions without censorship or restraint”. These two concepts which contradict one another often cause disagreements, especially over finding a balance between the two. There are many different forms of censorship. Some forms might completely and utterly change the original message, while some forms might be just simply hiding the actual truth. Though balancing free speech and censorship is difficult, allowing the destruction of information is no different from the form of censorship that was the job of Winston Smith in the dystopian community of 1984.

In the postwar united states, there was a huge anti communist sentiment caused by a fear of russian domination. Because of this, censorship became a part of life. This is primarily the reason why it remains a country that has very little immigrants and those who do immigrant come from even poorer regions and cannot gain the resources/money to cover expenses to travel to the United States.

Children’s innocence must be protected by censorship. The debate on whether censorship is beneficial to society often compiles to a few main reasons. Subjects like freedom of speech, women’s rights, and children’s innocence is brought into question when discussing censorship. It is an important debate because what is censored influences societal beliefs of what is right and wrong. It decides what truths are revealed publicly. Some people think censorship is beneficial because it supposedly protects children, but it is actually useless because it underestimates children’s tolerance, witholds information, oversexualizes women, and sugarcoats the truth.

The Cuban people have been under the harsh dictatorship of both Felgenico Batista and Fidel Castro. They both had very strict policies and gave the Cuban people limited or no freedom at all. Batista and Castro were similar but yet different. One major difference that they had was that Batista was friendly with the United States and he had respect for American interest. On the other hand Fidel Castro hasn’t been as friendly with the United States, so the U.S has a trade embargo that restricts and American company to do business with Cuba and also U.S citizens are prohibited from traveling to Cuba unless for special circumstances.
