The Cuban government avoids taking action on big issues due to bribes from people who don't want to see any change in Cuba. The people who are bribing these officials are most likely conducting illegal activities . Refworld.org has Cuba ranked from a scale from 0-10 (0 being the worst) 4.5 amoung 186 other countries.

Cubans have absolutely no problem sharing their feelings, thoughts, and ideas. They are known for being boisterous and not keeping anything to themselves. For example, when I have gone a long time without seeing a family member the first words out of their mouth are “oh my goodness! You have gained weight.” If anyone wants an honest opinion a Cuban is the right person to ask, they are very blunt and to the point. Although they are open to talk about anything to have a conversation, there are somethings that are considered taboo in discussion. A very touchy subject would be racism. In Cuba, they are still battling some issues with it. It is said that black Cubans do not get the same fair treatment as all the others. They are given the hardest and less remunerated jobs. Many Black Cubans complain that they are given a hard time in their jobs and get hassled the most by police when they are doing their jobs (New attitudes on once-taboo race questions emerge in Cuba, 2017).

Cuba is located in the northern Caribbean where the Caribbean Sea, the Gulf of Mexico, and the Atlantic Ocean meet. Cuba only shares its borders with only one country, which is the United States. The official language spoken is Spanish. Cuba’s flag is a very significant symbol to its people, Cubanos. Specifically, “the three blue stripes represent the sections the Island was divided into, the two white stripes suggest the purity of the intentions for the people’s independence, while the equilateral triangle stands for freedom, equality and fraternity, as France was once advocating as well. The red color stood for the blood that would be shed in order to claim the independence; with the white, single star as symbol of absolute freedom among its people” (insightcuba, 2017). Additionally, the Toroco bird is another symbol that is a very representative bird because it has the colors of the Cuban flag; red, white and blue. The Cuban Coat of Arms is the official heraldic symbol of Cuba. It consists of a shield, supported by an oak branch on one side and a laurel wreath on the other which represent, strength and honor. The island of Cuba has an abundant history in politics, religion and Politeness. Cuba is the largest island of the West Indies group is the same size of Pennsylvania, Cuba is west of Haiti and the Dominican Republic, and 90 miles south of Key West, Fla., Cuba’s island is at the entrance to the Gulf of Mexico. Arawak or Taino Indians were the indigenous land owner of Cuba before Columbus landed on the island 1492. Arawak or Taino Indians died from diseases brought by Columbus Sailors and settlers. By 1511, Spaniards under Diego Velásquez had established settlements.

Over the course of the semester, I gained great knowledge about Cuba, including many factors that have influenced the way its current society functions. There are many different components that helped configure Cuba’s history and the customs and traditions that Cubans still follow today. Some of the specific factors I find have heavily influenced Cuban culture are: economy, race, wealth, religion, and cultural traditions. Like many countries, Cubans were directly affected by religious beliefs and culture. Cuba became the center of the world’s attention in 1492 when Christopher Columbus set sail for Asia, only to land in what was then declared the New World.

It may seem that they don't make much money. Their prices in Cuba for things are far less than what we have here in the U.S. Like a bottle of coke is a dollar and twenty-two cents in Cuba and in the United States it is a dollar and seventy-five cents. Womens life expectancy in Cuba is 80 years old. Men's life expectancy in Cuba is 70 years old. Kids are required to go to school at least till high school. Uniforms are required at every school and they were different colors for each grade. The literacy rate in Cuba was 99% .Education is free to anyone all the way through the university level. They want everyone to have a chance to learn because most of them would not be able to afford to go to school or college.

The Cuban people have been under the harsh dictatorship of both Felgenico Batista and Fidel Castro. They both had very strict policies and gave the Cuban people limited or no freedom at all. Batista and Castro were similar but yet different. One major difference that they had was that Batista was friendly with the United States and he had respect for American interest. On the other hand Fidel Castro hasn’t been as friendly with the United States, so the U.S has a trade embargo that restricts and American company to do business with Cuba and also U.S citizens are prohibited from traveling to Cuba unless for special circumstances.

Cuba is a great country, with interesting things all around it. It is a great place to get spicy foods from, and education there is great. It is not how it used to be a century ago.
