Animal Cruelty and Abuse Animal abuse is said to be an under reported abuse stated by The Humane Society, it is also seen as a disturbing abuse. The rate in which animal abuse is going is only making it terrifying. The statistics of animal abuse are rising more and more with each year that comes. Although humans see it as something unfathomable, animal abuse occurs every day. Animal abuse is when physical pain, scarring, or death is brought upon an animal for no reason or showing it neglect. As shown in a group of statistics by The Humane Society shows that most abuse cases occur in dogs the most, commonly the pit bull. The Humane Society states that in 2001 abuse that occurred with

But if humans would just take a little more precaution in the person and get to know the buyer then more than likely you will see their true identity within that time and you can decide on wether you think it is a good or bad idea to sell your animal to that person.
There is a particular story told by a website called Animal Abuse and it tells a story of a pit bull named Oogy. The pit bull was one night thrown out as bait for another pit bull as practice before its fight. As Oogy was left there to die cops raided the house and immediately took Oogy to the animal hospital. As bad as the doctors wanted to save the poor dog it looked as if he was not going to make it through the surgery. The dog had lost a lot of blood and had his whole ear bitten off and some of his jaw taken off. But somehow he did, he made it through surgery. As a young man and his son came in with their 15 year old cat they saw the dog and instantly fell in love with the dog. They recalled it as if the dogs sent them a million kisses in that moment. The family later took the dog in and loved it as their own and took very good care of it - enough care to where it even learned to trust again, although it would have flashbacks. Once the father was kicking a stone off of their patio and as the dog saw the kicking motion he rushed back in the house and sat in the corner with fear in his eyes until he was soothed. Another
The rate at which animal cruelty occurs is at an alarming 71% in the United States according to ASPCA. Every 60 seconds, another animal is abused by a caretaker. Overall, cruelty encompasses neglect, abuse, abandonment, sexual abuse of animals and animal fighting. Due to efforts by organizations such as PETA, ASPCA, HSUS in educating and providing awareness to the topic of animal cruelty, many more individuals have become more aware of their actions against animals. In conjunction with these listed organizations, states such as Maryland have adopted legislation to help combat animal cruelty and serve as advocates for animals. The three most rigorous forms of animal abuse that need to be tackled are as followed, neglect, hoarding, and
According to the animal cruelty page on the ASPCA website in 2017, one animal is abused with every passing minute. This means that by the time I finish this speech, as many as seven animals will be the victim of undeserved cruelty. Based on these statistics, about 1,440 animals will suffer today.
Children who live in homes where animal abuse is present are often abused themselves and unfortunately, sometimes carry on with the cycle of abuse later on in life. “More than 80 percent of family members being treated for child abuse also had abused animals. In one-third of the cases, a child victim continued the cycle of violence by abusing a pet (“The animal abuse home violence connection”, 2013).”
Animal abuse is a quiet epidemic that is spreading throughout the world. The amount of animal abuse is growing and we must do something to stop it. Animal abuse is not putting a choke collar on a dog to keep it from biting an individual; it is not killing an animal for food. Animal abuse is the knowing or intentional "(1) tortures or serious overworks [of] an animal"; the "(2) failing unreasonably to provide necessary food, care, or shelter for an animal in his custody; kills, injures, or administers poison to an animal; [or] (6) causes one animal to fight with another" (Title 3). The majority of states in the U.S. classify abusive treatment toward animals as a misdemeanor. A misdemeanor is punished by a fine of
What is animal abuse? For starters, animal abuse is when a person inflicts suffering or harm on any animal. Most people, all over the world own an animal; but there are still far more animals left out on the street. Homeless animals are either left out on the streets or are “thrown” into shelters. This became a problem because not all animals are domesticated. Animal shelters began as pounds. “When the system began to be used to impound wandering dogs and cats, these animals were often killed because little monetary value was placed on them” (Lila Miller, Animal sheltering in the United States: Yesterday, today, and tomorrow, 1) . This issue persists because shelter workers and others truly believe that an animal life has no value, but that is not true; animals are living beings just like humans with brains, hearts, and bones. A reported case was that “authorities had seized 23 puppies, 11 cats, and four adult dogs from a self-processed animal “rescue” after they were found in the “rescuer’s” filthy home.” (‘No-Kill’ Label Slowly Killing Animals, 3). This means that an unauthorized person hoarded many animals and forced the animals into an unsafe “shelter”. The shelter being a dirty home.
There are many different things that fall under the category of “cruelty”, neglect and abuse being the two main subcategories. The most common type of animal abuse involves dogs, Pit-bulls in particular. In 2007, of 1800 media-reported cases of animal cruelty, 64% (1,126) involved dogs, 18% (337) involved cats, and 18% (337) involved other animals. Some of the most common places where animal abuse occur are, in no particular order: fur farms, dog fights, laboratories, races (both Greyhound and horse), slaughterhouses, and puppy mills. Some less thought of forms of animal abuse are crush videos, traditional Chinese medicine, the cat/dog meat trade in Asia, the ivory trade, trophy hunting, and even shock collars. Abandonment is the leading form of animal cruelty. (See illustration.)
Increased awareness regarding animal cruelty would benefit society, pet owners, and animals themselves. When a problem is identified, it becomes easier to work out solutions. Animal cruelty is an issue on a global scale; animal torture and neglect does not only exist in the United States. Animal cruelty is the “crime of inflicting physical pain, suffering or death on an animal, usually a tame one, beyond necessity for normal discipline. It can include neglect that is so monstrous (withholding food and water) that the animal has suffered, died or been put in an imminent
It is an ongoing issue that the animals that are being tested have been known to suffer. Vivisection is one of the worst forms of institutionalized animal abuse in our society, and it is a sanctioned and legal abuse. Within laboratory walls, what can be done to animals has no limit except those imposed by a committee selected by the facility itself. Imagine spending your entire life as a hospital patient or prisoner, and this will only begin to approximate the life of an animal in a laboratory. What happens to you can range from uncomfortable to agonizing to deadly—and you are helpless to defend yourself. Animals in labs live stressful, monotonous, and unnatural lives of daily confinement and deprivation. The only changes in their
Animal abuse is defined as either the physical mistreatment of an animal or neglect where the animal is denied basic necessities of care. The mistreatment of animals is a serious issue within society. It often goes unreported because many people believe it is only abuse if it is intentional. This lack of understanding allows minor cases of neglect to progress into major cases that can end in the death of the animals involved. Animal abuse needs a better definition due to the results of neglect, psychological issues, and ethical components.
The shocking number of animal abuse cases reported every day is nothing compared to most of those which are never reported. Cases of animal abuse are not compiled by the state or federal agencies such as violent crimes against humans. This makes it much more difficult to calculate how much it actually happens. Information available to us can help us better understand and prevent cases of abuse against animals. They're all special and talented in their own way. Animals should not be shown for games or entertainment.
Animals feel pain and are capable of suffering, just like people. Animals are beaten and starved to death almost every day. Millions of animals die each year because of brutal and insensitive owners. Most people don’t understand the feelings that animals have and honestly I don’t understand it either but what I do understand is when I see an animal that has been abused, I can tell the way it acts toward people and their surroundings. They’re terrified of us and almost every move we make. It is not a pretty sight to witness. “In one January case, a necropsy showed a dog that had starved to death, with no fat remaining even in its bone marrow, leading to a felony charge for its owner.” (Deirdre, 2) I understand that when an animal gets abused, they hurt really bad and they can feel the pain of what us humans feel sometimes too if we were to get punched it hurts but just
Unfortunately today there are many cases of animal abuse happening around the world. Animal cruelty or animal abuse can be defined as the infliction of suffering or harm upon animals for purposes other than self-defense. There are many different types of abuse such as using animals for research, using animals for entertainment purposes, abandoning animals to shelters, and animal neglect. We need to raise awareness and find a solution to these issues. Animals are suffering and we need to help them.
As a matter of fact, animal abuse is a nationwide issue that happens every day. Pets are left behind or tortured without food or great care. However, most pet abuses happens in both rural and urban economy. When it happen they are never reported. The number one pet that is been abuse is dogs. Everyone want a dog but do not have enough time or money to care if them. A few pet owner bet money on their pet to win the fight, which can become a crime.
Recently, there have been many animals that have been abused. A dog named Caitlyn was sold to a man because her owners did not want to be evicted for her harmful behavior (2015, June 03). She was sold to William Leonard Dodson, 3 years ago. She was returned to her previous owner the next day, but her muzzle was taped shut with electrical tape because she wouldn’t stop barking. Her owner was mad & said “Don't let me find you. That's all I can say, don't let me find you because that's part of my family you just did some foul things to”. The previous owners also said that Dodson had been laughing when he taped up the dog. Unfortunately, Caitlyn lost ¼ of her tongue, but that was less than the doctors expected. This was in 2015, so a more recent
In life, it is normal see a few stray animals around town digging in the trash cans, walking around, or trying not to get hit by cars as they go from one place to the next. On a particular day, there was a dog that stood out from the others to one person. Libby was on her stomach, crawling towards the person in a happy yet fearful manner. The person did not know why until giving the dog an overlooking. What the person found was shocking. Libby had a number tattooed inside her left ear, which confused the person. Being taken to an animal clinic, some disturbing news was uncovered.
